“Shattered” is one of our heaviest songs, but also one of our most musically dynamic. The oscillation between heavy and light captures the vacillating experience of mourning, as this song is about our experience as suicide loss survivors. It’s the first co-writing experience between me (instrumentalist and vocalist Brandon O’Neill) and our guitarist Hannah Haupt. We merged our personal hand-written journal entries into a combined lament. Hannah’s free verse contained the phrase “now we’re all shattered too” which is how the rest of the song coalesced. It’s also one of the rare times we utilize screamed vocals, which we thought was perfect for the tenor of the song.
