Interviews: Heinous Exsanguination
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Brutal Death Metal/Slam/Death Metal band Heinous Exsanguination from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?
There’s no super deep meaning or cool story behind how we came up with the name. I will say that it wasn’t completely random though, I (JP) wanted it to be inspired by horror somehow. I’m a huge fan of horror movies and slashers, so I wanted it to have a similar theme. Heinous Exsanguination basically means to drain someone of their blood in a shocking or evil way, which is pretty on par with that!
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
There’s just something about slamming brutal death that makes it, in my opinion, the most fun genre to create. I am a huge fan of the sheer brutality and rawness associated with brutal death. It’s also a genre that for the most part doesn’t take itself too seriously. I think that’s something that’s needed these days more than ever.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
We did, but just from other music projects we have together. Mitchell and I met online through our passion for creating music. We talked about making some tunes together, as he is a songwriter and producer and I am a vocalist, and we just meshed together really well from the start. Since then we have started a number of projects together, and I’m super grateful to have started this friendship with such a dope dude and musician.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
JP – What a loaded question haha. It’s really hard to pick one band as an absolute favorite, but for the sake of answering the question let’s give it a shot. Without overthinking, the first band that comes to mind is Traumatomy. They have been in the game for a long time now and have put out a lot of music over the years, consistently showcasing top-tier brutal death metal in my opinion.
Mitchell – Metal royalty Lamb of God! Lamb of God is my favorite band because I discovered them at an early age and those riffs, breakdowns, and songs in general just SLAP!
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
The biggest thing that inspires us to write our songs is other bands. Both Mitchell and I genuinely love brutal music and listen to it often. We try to incorporate styles from a wide variety of brutal death genres in our music, sometimes more obvious than others. There’s nothing better than jamming out to a track that you are really feeling to inspire you to pick up your instruments and write some music.
6. Where was your last gig?
Heinous Exsanguination is not a live act, as we live across the country from each other, however, we have both played in live bands in the past. For myself (JP) it’s been a VERY long time haha. My last live gig had to be around 2010, still pretty fresh out of high school, with my band 42 Children, a deathcore band inspired by bands like The Acacia Strain and Whitechapel.
7. Whom would you like to feature with?
I love working with other artists on music and there is definitely a huge list of people that I would want to work with. Some of the top choices that I’d love to hear on a Heinous Exsanguination track would be Ruben Rosas of Devourment, Kirill Zarubin of Traumatomy, Kiriakos Destounis of Embryectomy, and Andrew Lomastro of Cerebral Incubation. But like I said, there are plenty of others that I would want to work with, from large and smaller bands as well.
8. Whom not?
I don’t have anyone to throw shade at specifically, so let’s just say as long as you’re not a horrible human being then I’m down to work with you.
9. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Stage fright was never something that I really had to deal with, which is kind of weird because I’m a pretty quiet person. There was just something about having the microphone and knowing that I was proud of what I could do that washed away the anxiety of performing. What I can say is that for some reason, the bigger the crowd was, the less anxious I felt. That could be different for other people, but I guess I felt like the smaller the crowd the more focused they are watching your every move. My tip would be just to remember that most people who take the time and spend the money to go see a live performance aren’t there to judge you, they are there to have a good time so just go out and give it your all.
10. What bands have inspired you the most?
That’s super hard to answer because I think I am more inspired by music as a whole than any particular band. I’ve been a fan of brutal music for about 20 years now and have watched as it progressed throughout the years. If you asked me this question towards the start of my brutal music journey I probably would have said The Acacia Strain. For the past 10 or so years though that answer would be drastically different, I would have to go with Devourment and Kraanium.
11. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Haven’t really had the opportunity to experience this unfortunately haha. I have had a couple of people ask me to sign merch they purchased which is super cool but nothing weird or interesting yet. I’ll be sure to let you know if and when it happens!
12. What do you think of your fans?
I think our fans are awesome. In a very cliché answer, we do this because we genuinely love making brutal music. Anyone who takes to time to play our music and support us is awesome and we are forever grateful to each and every one of them.
13. What do you think of our site?
It's sick! Any site, person, organization, etc. supporting and bringing awareness to heavy music is super cool by us. You all go above and beyond, showcasing free music, music to purchase, links to socials and streaming services, band biographies, and a real one-stop shop.
14. Something to add?
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to answer these questions and be a part of Breathing the Core. We appreciate what you do for brutal music, keep up the sick work and we hope to be back to talk again in the future!
