Behind The Tracks: Tooth Gore - Spoiled Milk (Single) (2024)
Spoiled Milk was the first proper song I ever wrote and finished, inspired by the personal
writing style of bands like FIDLAR and PUP with the song being an inward reflection of my
own insecurities and feelings of inadequacy. I wrote the intro 6/8 section to almost create a
false sense of security so that when the faster, more punky section hits, it has the impact of
being hit by a truck, like the high contrast dynamics of the Pixies music I was also listening to
a lot at the time.
Spoiled Milk was also the first song I recorded for the album Halloween, so the experience of
hearing this song I wrote in my bedroom grow naturally over the course of the recording
session was a surreal experience. The first time I heard the instrumental track play with bass
and drums it felt like an eye-opener that Tooth Gore could really become something, it really
sounded like the early Green Day records that I’d grown up listening to.
Ross Rothero-Bourge at the Cube Studios really helped develop this sound, as he played
both the drums and bass on this track and was able to produce the 2000s punk sound that
defines the song.
Recording in a proper studio like the Cube Studios was a necessary but intimidating step up
from the pub gigs and bedroom practices that I’d been used to at the time, I think it really
helped me grow as an artist and develop a more professional attitude towards songwriting.
