Interviews: Dismalimerence

On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Black Metal/Atmospheric Black Metal band Dismalimerence from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE!

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?

The name Dismalimerence was created because of the specific style of our black metal and lyrical content. I felt like music and things in my life were very up and down so, Dismal and Limerence felt like the best way to describe what I was experiencing in my life and with my music. I believe it’s a great representation of the music we create between dark, heavy, dramatic, and heartfelt aspects.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

While I was growing up and first finding more underground metal music, black metal was my first passion in the subgenres. I’ve always wanted to create this style of music and put my twist on the genre.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

I knew Craig from his band Dissona before I asked him to record and write our single Sequestered Hearts back in 2018 so we had some familiar ground since I used to go to his band's shows quite often. Alex and I have been friends for a very very long time as well and I think we were just bound to start playing together at some point. We’ve gone to each other's shows in the past and I’m incredibly thankful to have him in this band now. Without him, Resplendence and Tome II wouldn’t be what it is! I met Graham at one of our shows last autumn. We discussed his auditioning and showing us what he could bring to the table for our already-released music and future projects. Graham is our most recent member, yet it feels like he’s been in the band with us since the start. His contributions live and on this record are spectacular and I can’t wait to get more of his talents on the next record.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Craig: Blind Guardian

Elijah: Between the Buried and Me

Graham: Children of Bodom

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Many many things inspire me to write our music. Sometimes it starts as poetry, sometimes retrospective thoughts and reflection, and sometimes it can be from movies, art, and current life experiences. I would say what really inspired me to write for Tome II was nostalgia and recent memories in my life.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was in our city of Chicago, IL with Sadness, Vulning, and Apophy.

7. Where would you like to act?

We’d love to play anywhere where people would love to see us. We’re not a grinding touring band at all, so if there was an opportunity elsewhere and outside of our state, we’d love to perform.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Warforged, Carrion Vael, and Amiensus.

9. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

I’m sure everyone who hasn’t performed quite a lot would have some stage fright. That’s natural while you’re working on your performance craft. I have not felt that way in quite some time but I do remember feeling extra anxious and worried about every little thing going right throughout a show. I suppose the best advice I can give is to rehearse as much as you can, think about everything you feel like you need to improve on and make it happen! It’s all about having fun and giving the audience something to remember. Don’t sweat the minor stuff and just worry about putting on a show for people who paid to see you.

10. What bands have inspired you the most?

This a tough one because so many different bands influence our sound. But to name a few, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Wolves In The Throne Room, The Faceless, If These Trees Could Talk, Opeth, and so many more.

11. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Luckily, nothing too weird! But people have wanted a signed piece of merch, guitar pick, or drumstick; it’s most certainly theirs to have.

12. What do you think of your fans?

I think our fans are more of our friends than anything else. I think our fans have a finger on the pulse for the emotive and romanticized approach of our music and they appreciate the styles we’re blending together to create a musical experience that anyone can relate to. I think we have the best fans in the world. We’ve received an incredible amount of support from them all and we’re thankful for every single thing they do! Keep sharing our music with friends!

13. What do you think of our site?

I love that everything is so easy to access on your home page! Definitely a haven for all things metal! We appreciate the opportunity to have our words included in your platform.

14. Something to add?

Lastly, thanks to everyone who has been supporting our music! Without you all, we’d just be playing, writing, and making art for ourselves. We have another album we plan on finishing with writing this winter and we set out to deliver another record soon! Thanks, Elijah.
