Interviews: Equals Infinity
On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Metalcore band Equals Infinity from France. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?
The band name referred to a quote from Einstein: “Two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I am not yet completely sure about the universe.”
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We like the brutality permitted by metal music as an additional nuance contrasted with delicate soft harmonies, and the surprise we can get from hearing complex rhythms
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
No, the band was created by Maxime and was a solo project for 1 year.
Every musician auditioned but we are all good friends now!
4. Each band member's favourite band?
We are unable to choose just one artist but here are some of our preferences:
Maxime: Tesseract, Monuments, Trivium, SoaD
Aymeric: Meshuggah, Tesseract, Korn, Mick Gordon
Rémi: Meshuggah, Tesseract, BTBAM, Gojira
Benjamin: Animals As Leaders, Allan Holdsworth, Pat Metheny
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
As the band’s name, a lot of songs refer to spatial exploration and the sins of humanity.
Our last EP, Wanderers pt1 takes these themes from the angle of never finding peace.
6. Where was your last gig?
We are touring across France for several months now, and the last gig in Bordeaux was an absolute smash!
7. Where would you like to act?
We hope to get out of France in the future, maybe England where the prog community is huge, or eastern europe, it would be a huge step before considering US or Asia.
But more than cities we are hoping to play on biggest stages and festivals like the Hellfest to share our music with as many people as possible
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
There are a lot of brilliant musicians in the prog scene, we all have our preferences (Dan Tompkins, David Maxim Micic, Fredrik Thordendal, Spencer Sotelo, Mario Duplantier…).
If an occasion comes later we would be honored, but we don’t run after that.
The most important thing for now is to build our universe.
9. Whom not?
Honestly, featuring with any musician of any genre of music could be interesting, something unexpected could be really interesting.
Maybe featuring with someone that doesn't fit our values could be complicated.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Yes, at the beginning of our music journey, some of us were terrified, but after a lot of confrontation with the public it started to fade.
The key is to perform as often as possible in front of people, and work your instrument really hard so when you go on stage you can free yourself from the stress of the technique and enjoy the music.
The most important thing is to seize the moment and share it with the public!
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
People often tell us they hear some Tesseract, Monuments, Gojira or BTBAM in the songs.
Maxime, being the main composer of the band, has the most obvious influences, but each musician proposing a riff brings his own influences.
Sometimes also people tell us our songs look like some bands we never heard before!
We must have the same influences tho
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Our fans are really kind for now, there is nothing too strange but we are discovering some things we had never thought of doing like fans taking our setlist after a show and wanting us to dedicate it
13. What do you think of your fans?
We see our community grow little by little and they are all very kind and supportive.
Most of them are like us but we are surprised to see that some younger or older people can be touched by our songs, even some that don’t usually listen to metal music.
14. What do you think of our site?
It’s great promoting emerging artists, your different angles (cover explaining, interviews, track by tracks) are interesting and the overall site is friendly to use.
Thank you for your work!
15. Something to add?
Thank you for sharing our music across the ocean! Merci beaucoup de nous avoir écouté!
