Behind The Tracks: Sharper Side - Lifeblood (Single) (2025)
We wanted to create a song that describes human addiction. The lyrical intent was for it to be relatable to anybody who’s hooked on anything, but in this instance, I’m singing about caffeine - my personal (if only slightly millennial) Lifeblood! The chorus refrain was written first, “…and I wouldn’t give you up even if I could” and the rest of the song built around it.
After the demo was patched together we hit the studio, and our drummer Ryan added his personal touch in making the arrangement that little bit heavier (double kick and chugged guitar in the verses, plus just generally hitting it… hard) - exactly what the track needed to bulk it up.
Speaking of ‘hard’, we had some good times recording the gang vocals in the chorus (you have to do it a LOT of times to make four voices sound like four hundred) where we had to align Ben’s kiwi accent with the words “Let’s raise a glass to the past, I swear this cup’s the last”. Sweet as, bro.
Heavy start, loud middle, and a sudden end - with a few comedowns in between. A day in the life of the addict.
