Interviews About Albums: The Dark - The Dark (2025)
In this new interview, we sat down with the American Heavy Rock band The Dark to ask questions about their album, "The Dark".
1. Your music blends industrial influences with modern metal aggression. How did you develop this distinct sound, and what were some of your key inspirations while creating the EP?
Alan was originally inspired by video game and movie soundtracks, and I had been working on a lot of metal and disco for the last several years, so I think those in combination with our shared love for industrial rock, nu-metal, and modern metal all just blossomed into what eventually became our sound.
2. Your visuals create a brooding and mysterious atmosphere. How does the visual aesthetic tie into the themes and stories of the EP?
The sound and the lyrics really clicked together nicely, and so it was really important to me that the visuals had the same cohesiveness. There are these polished, intimate moments followed by disgustingly heavy bits in the songs, and so I thought it’d be cool to have the forward-facing artwork be very polished and clean, almost like advertisements, and then when you dive a bit deeper into music videos and socials it’s all pretty grungy. The lyrics touch on this same motif of “things are not what they seem”. It’s all one thing.
3. "Chemicals," "Slip Away," and "Head Of The Snake" have already gained significant traction. How have these early successes shaped your expectations for the EP's release?
I don’t know what to expect anymore! I didn’t think our first couple of songs would do anything notable, let alone hit the radio. We’ve been a bit shocked but mainly just freaking stoked. I hope the EP is well received, I think there are some really cool things people haven’t heard yet. Dive in and pay attention!
4. "Chemicals" has resonated widely with audiences and earned substantial radio play. What does that track mean to you, and why do you think it connects so deeply with listeners?
It’s about coping with the state of things, in a particularly unhealthy way. It came from a real place, and I tried to turn it into more of an abstract story but it all bled through. I think everyone has had those feelings one way or another.
5. Craig, Alan, Nick, and Derek each bring unique backgrounds to the band. How has your chemistry evolved as a group, and how does each member's input shape The Dark's sound?
Alan and I have been writing for a few years now so we really know how to work with each other. It’s fast and easy and we just gel really well. Before the song goes off to master, I always ask Derek if there are any drum parts he’d want to change, but 99% of this was done as Alan and my creative project before we really formed a band. That said - Nick and Derek are both insanely talented at their instruments and we wouldn’t rather have anyone else in the world with us on this journey. They bring a lot to the table energetically and socially and make the whole experience a lot more fun for everyone.
6. Alan Ashby's involvement brings added attention due to his work with Of Mice & Men. How has his experience influenced the band’s approach to songwriting and performance?
His experience is so valuable. He’s been through so many record deals, tours, and label conversations, I just trust him with everything. Everything is just like, in general, haha. He’s like my big brother!
7. With the debut EP establishing your presence, what’s next for The Dark in terms of tours, music videos, or other projects in 2025?
I can’t tell you yet! A lot though.
8. The Dark’s music feels both cinematic and deeply personal. What do you want listeners to take away from this EP, both musically and emotionally?
I want people to understand that I care so much it like, literally interferes with my whole life. The songs, the lyrics, the production, the videos, the art, and so on all matter to me so much. There are all sorts of easter eggs and motifs and things. I can become obsessive and I love it honestly.
9. In a crowded music scene, what makes The Dark an essential listen for 2025?
I guess that’s for you to decide. We’re just making something we think is really cool. But like, we’re not just hitting breakdowns and choruses, you know? It’s an effort to really make something different and interesting.
10. The EP drops on February 21. How do you plan to celebrate the release, and are there any special surprises fans can look forward to?
We’re celebrating the best way we know how - our debut headline show! Los Angeles, Feb 23.
