Interviews About Albums: In We Fall - Inner Self (2024)

In this new interview, we sat down with the Portuguese Alternative Metal band In We Fall to ask questions about their album, "Inner Self".

1. What is your name and what do you do in the band?

My name is Carlos and I play guitar in the band In We Fall.

2. What can you say about this new EP/CD?

This is our debut album and it´s called “Inner Self”. We are very happy with the way it turned out as we think it has a blend of things we collectively enjoy as a band. I guess you can say our core sound is influenced by alternative metal and rock from the 90’s-00’s but there are also elements of some prog, some nu-metal, and other stuff. Our main focus was to write good and cohesive songs that we all like and to be as genuine and true to ourselves while doing it. It´s got some heavy riffs, massive drum sounds, catchy melodic vocals, and  some mildly progressive harmonies in there…We really think it´s got something for everyone and we tried to blend all those influences as naturally as we could so we could hopefully find our identity within it.

3. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?

The album’s title is “Inner Self” so it really shines a light on an individual’s relationship with himself. It´s connected to everything, from the struggles, the joy, the interaction with the world around us, to the people around us. Basically, it represents a journey through all that is inherent to life and how we deal with it internally.

4. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?

Usually, it´s me and our lead singer Daniel who compose everything. We then show it to our drummer Fred and our bassist Luís and we arrange everything collectively until we get somewhere we all agree on. It´s a pretty standard way of doing things as far as composing/arranging in a band goes, nothing fancy.

5. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

To me, I guess it would be the album’s second track (A)void. It has contrasting parts, ranging from a groovy main riff, an intense and catchy chorus, and a cool middle section containing an awesome breakdown. As of now, that’s probably my favorite track of the album.

6. Is there a special message in this EP/CD? If there is what it is?

As mentioned previously, the main theme of the record is one’s self-journey through life and its idiosyncratic elements. From there, you can extract whatever message feels right to you. However, if I had to say something about it, it would probably be about how relatable and shareable the human experience can be and that we have the ability to become stronger as we endure struggle, leading to better times.

7. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

I really love Daniel’s lyrics. One example that I really love is in the track “What Now?”, the more mellow song on the record:

“Reaching for pain as a way to survive
Lose all hope with an open smile
A silent talk, an open book
The ending is near so lose all fears”.
Another one I really love is in the chorus for the track Winter Shades:
“You can’t not betray
Yourself along the way
I’m leaning towards life
Empty pictures show
A broken heart to go
Underneath your arms”

8. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

Thematically, the inspirations were plenty. Lyrically you’ll find a lot of things in there that can be interpreted in many ways but there is always an underlying theme of personal experience and perseverance. Instrumentally there is variety also, as we tried to create a balanced palate of aggressive and peaceful, straightforward and intricate. Also, all those factors like friends and family were really essential for the making of this record, being from a supportive point of view or even an artistically inspirational point of view.

9. Something to add?

Just that we are really proud of this record and we really hope people love it as much as we do. So go follow us on all our social media platforms and stay tuned for upcoming news!
