Interviews: Grey Czar
On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Heavy Progressive Rock band Grey Czar from Austria. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, did you plan it or come out just like that?
We sat for weeks, searching through all dinosaur names, ancient animals, and colors we could imagine to combine with, and got stuck with Grey Czar. Mostly because our music is not as black as sabbath and GRCZ are wonderful initials.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Mainly because it is a hell lot of fun to be loud and wild and all our band members can express their own imagination of sound/color in the evolution of our music ... the progy edge is a result of our different styles, musical tastes, and our weird minds.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
The three of us have a long history together. We have known each other since our youth - which is now gone I think :) - out of a school-related context, the regional music scene, and party together ... despite all the changes in our lives, music glues us together and is a constant companion.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
There is a ton of great music in all its facets and genres out there, so why choose?
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Since I started playing music in my childhood I tried to find my own expression on my instruments and never was quite into copying styles and reproducing sounds. But I surely am influenced by all the music that I listen to, that touches my soul and I admire it.
The inspiration comes out of a fundamental need to create and express something.
When we come together as a band in the rehearsal space there are those magical moments, where everything falls into place and you wonder how it just happened. Thats inspiring.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was at Rockhouse Salzburg together with Zolle. Amazing Lardrock duo from Italy and super nice people. Had a great time hanging out with them! Go check them out!
7. Where would you like to act?
There are some really cool local festivals, a hell lot of other festivals all around Europe, and a huge amount of clubs, cultural centers, and small stages. To play a few of them would be quite nice. 😊
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
First and foremost with nice people. When it comes to bigger bands, members of Baroness, Orange Goblin, and Red Fang seemed to be some when we had the opportunity to speak to them while visiting their gig. David Sullivan of Red Fang, for example, helped a friend get into a sold-out show by putting her on their guest list. Thanks for that! That's very nice of you!
9. Whom not?
Andreas Gabalier
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
There's still a bit of anxiety left before a gig but the years have made me more settled. It helps me to talk to people and have a sip of beer, try to relax. Right before the concert, I center. It also helps to join forces with your bandmates before you enter the stage. We put our heads together and screamed out our anxiety.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
I'm often receptive to more unusual and unpredictable music, staggered rhythms, breaks, and music that challenges you. But I also prefer strong melodies and captive, delicate songs. Sometimes it has to be straightforward in your face rock. So, there are a lot of bands. Motorpsycho, Meshuggah, Dozer, Orange Goblin, Turbonegro, 16 Horsepower, Rival Sons, Porn to Hula, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Melvins, QUOTSA, … just to name a few.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
I think you need more fame to have weird requests from fans.
13. What do you think of your fans?
Our fans are true! They are the best and extremely patient listeners ... a lot of love to them.
14. What do you think of our site?
Your site is a visually well-organized repository, filled with heavy
madness from the underground.
We are very happy to be embedded in it.
15. Something to add?
Keep on rocking!
