Interviews: Karah

On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Thrash Metal/Death Metal band Karah from Croatia. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?

Vitan: It just came out, we were at a Gojira concert and Slavko just said it out of a sudden.

Slavko: It started as a wordplay for slang in our mother tongue. But also along the way, we found out that the combination of words has meaning: “The soul of Rah”. That’s where the apostrophe comes from.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Vitan: Because we listen to death metal on a daily basis and it makes us happy.

Lucija: I agree with Vitan.

Slavko: I started with thrash metal because of it’s raw and energetic sound, but somehow fell down the rabbit hole and ended out on the other side of death metal.

David: Originally I started with black and thrash metal but then later started listening to death, fell in love with it, and wanted to play that style of music.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Vitan: Slavko (guitarist), Kiš(former guitarist) and I(vocalist) knew each other and we met others along the way.

Slavko: The three of us started to jam in my old garage. Met Lucija at one underground party and then started on an adventure to find a drummer. After trying with few different ones we finally met Marin with an attitude “Maybe I can’t play it now, but I’ll get to it”, which is what we are looking for from our bandmates.

David: Before I joined the band we met two separate times and the second time we met, Slavko told me that they were looking for a guitarist and I offered to play guitar for the band.

Lucija: A few days after I moved to Zagreb, I met Slavko at an underground party. That’s when he asked me if I wanted to join the band.

4. Each band member's favourite band?

Vitan: Chethe’ilist

Slavko: Even though I will never be able to play a thing from them - Archspire.

David: Hate eternal

Lucija: Children of Bodom

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Vitan: A lot of other metal bands inspire us... We usually get inspired after concerts or some other music-related events.

Slavko: I am taking influences from every spectre of music. Most riffs come out after some show while we are all still high on the feeling. I like to mix raw and catchy riffs with something fast and heavy to get that feeling of jumping between the genres. While still being catchy, fun to play and exciting to listen to.

David: Most of my inspirations come from my favourite albums and concerts I went to.

Lucija: Slavko inspires me to write my lines

6. Where was your last gig?

It was in our hometown Zagreb, in a venue called AKC Attack “Medika”.

7. Where would you like to act?

We would like to play wherever we could. We aren’t picky and scared of the size of the stage.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Slavko: It’s a long list from legends such as Exodus and Testament to the experimentalism of Blood Incantation and Rivers of Nihil.

David: That would probably be Hate Eternal, Cannibal Corpse and Vitriol.

9. Whom not?

Every band has something unique to offer, but we prefer to share the stage with artists who share similar interests and values.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Vitan: Of course I have, it is a normal thing that gets easier over time. For me, a light-hearted conversation with your band members helps.

Slavko: Still it helps being tuned in with your band. Especially first shows were the hardest because it was a totally new experience and the expectations were high. The feedback from the crowd is important. If you put energy into your show the crowd gives it back and the whole show is brought to another level.

Lucija: Before the show, we warm up on our instruments and joke around. I still get stage fright before every performance, but it gets better with experience. And to be honest, a beer or two before the show always helps calm the nerves.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Vitan: Morbid Angel, Suffocation, and Nile are just a few that I like.

Slavko: Exodus, Obituary and Cannibal Corpse are a few on the long list.

David: Hate Eternal, Dehumanizing Itatrain Worship and Nile.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Slavko: A fan asked me, in the middle of my solo, if I could sell my pedalboard to him and started to bargain for it.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Vitan: They are people who like the same or similar music that I love and I appreciate that very much.

Slavko: I’m always at our merch stand and absolutely love interactions with them before and after the show.

14. What do you think of our site?

Slavko: I have been following your site for quite some time now. It helped me find out some new bands I started to like

15. Something to add?

Vitan: Just do what you like and that is most important.
