Interviews About Albums: IRONRAT - Beneath It All (2025)
In this new interview, we sat down with the UK Doom Metal band IRONRAT to ask questions about their album, "Beneath It All".
1. What can you say about Beneath It All?
It’s the culmination of years of adversity, moving forward then backward, but overall the drive to achieve something we could all be proud of and reflective of where we, as a band, stand in the world and also among a myriad of great bands.
2. What is the meaning of the Beneath It All name?
To look further than what’s visible and generally presented as true. Just dig a little deeper.
3. Which one is the composer of Beneath It All?
We’ve all had a part to play in composing it. Usually, Martin or Wayne will bring a riff and we’ll all work on it together. We’ll bring in our own instruments and then add musical shifts every few bars, be it a changing guitar harmony, a rhythmic shift, or a counter-bass melody. Then we’ll jointly work on transitioning to another, section. Finally, vocals and lyrics are brought in.
4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?
For straight-ahead groove, we have always loved the vibe and composition of Tip of My Tongue. But each song has a different feel and vibe we love but the surprise of the album for us was Burn. It had been a tricky one to write and to get the right pace and feel for. Sometimes it had gone down really well, other times really not so. But once we had got the tracks down in the studio we knew we had captured it and were all pulling Steve Harris poses listening to the buildup. But then Martin went in and added the vocal harmonies which elevated it so much more.
5. Is there a special message in Beneath It All? If there is what it is?
The realization that when everything is glossed over are things how they really seem - a quick dig beneath the surface can reveal truths that may have been hidden, inadvertently or more usually to subvert reality and the truth.
6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?
We love this verse from Tip of My Tongue
“my lifestyle’s taken a nose dive.... but I’m still alive
Stood starting at the face....in the mirror
I know I’m making ‘bout as much sense as ever....have I ever?
Take a look to see what’s around the corner....if I care....if I dare”
7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank specially?
Forming stronger musical bonds within the band that have enabled us to move forward.
8. Something to add?
Working with Chris Fielding was inspirational, a pleasure and an honour, he has a great ear and is very dedicated to pushing the boundaries and dynamics.
