Interviews: Deadly Apples
On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Rock/Metal band Deadly Apples from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?
When I was a kid, I played a talent show with some friends and we called ourselves The Apples. That word always stayed in my head, and years later I wanted to match it with another word when I started this band. Deadly Apples just sounded right, there’s a mystique and darkness about it that reminds me of names like Smashing Pumpkins or Nine Inch Nails. People can have their own meaning or interpretation of the name.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We both enjoy diverse styles of music, but we always gravitate more towards darker music or themes. On this new album, we wanted to offer our own take on a classic genre in a way that feels modern, relevant, and authentic.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
I originally met Antoine when I had started an earlier version of this band, and he had his own project called Syntheticuse. At the time, it felt like most of our local scene was punk-rock, hardcore, and death metal. We were literally the only two guys doing this kind of music, so we ended up joining forces.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
It’s hard to only pick one, but the band that really got me into music when I was a kid was Korn. We went on tours with them in Japan and Europe, and Munky played our songs Further and Help. As for Antoine, Metallica was the band that got him into music as a kid. The drums on the new album were recorded on the same drum kit used by Lars Ulrich for the recording of the Black Metal, which was very special to him.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
For this new album, we were both going through terrible experiences while writing it, and I think that comes through in both the music that Antoine wrote and in my lyrics which reflect these dark times, as well as social commentary on the current climate of extremism on both sides as the backdrop.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last show was in Texas.
7. Where would you like to act?
If you mean performing concerts, we want to keep playing all over the world. We’ve had the privilege of touring all over the US, Europe, Mexico, South America, and Japan with amazing bands. I’d love to tour Australia, as we’ve never been there yet. We’re looking forward to getting back on stage – our shows are very intense and that’s the best way to experience Deadly Apples.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
If you mean collaborating on a song, I would say Trent Reznor as we love his work and respect him as a true artist.
9. Whom not?
Most rock bands these days, feel bland, safe, and boring. We need to bring back the danger and the excitement in rock music.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Most bands just get up on stage, play their instruments, and leave, which is fine. But to me, getting on stage feels like therapy, like an exorcism. This probably explains why our shows are very intense and often end up with injuries. The adrenaline kills the stage fright.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
There are too many to name, but I would say a lot of music from the 80s and 90s when rock still felt meaningful, and current music is more in the pop, electronic, and hip-hop worlds. We’re also very inspired by film scores – Antoine does work as a film composer.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
I was offered to get breastfed backstage at a show. I won’t reveal whether I accepted or not.
13. What do you think of your fans?
We’re very grateful for the overwhelming support since the release of Volatile, we’re doing amazing numbers so far. We greatly appreciate everyone and this is just the beginning.
14. What do you think of our site?
It looks great!
15. Something you'd like to add?
Our new album DISTRESS is going to come out this summer. We’ll be releasing a new single and some music videos every 5 to 6 weeks approximately until the full album release. We’ll also be announcing more festivals and tours soon.
