Interviews About Albums: Masseti - Odds And Ends (2025)

In this new interview, we sat down with the Brazilian Progressive Metal artist Masseti to ask questions about his album, "Odds And Ends".

1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?

This album came to life during the pandemic, where I wrote many songs without knowing exactly what I would do with them in the future. I spent some time considering the possibility of reforming Daydream XI in New York but eventually decided it was best to move on with a different name, a fresh start. The album didn’t have a concept or a story, so I was able to treat every song as a separate entity, a project in its own. Originally I was just recording this for myself. I had too many songs lying around and I wanted to listen to them in a full production format. When Milton, my good friend and now manager, listened to it, he convinced me we should pursue a proper release and get this out to the world, to form a lineup and make this into a fully-fleshed musical act.

2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?

The expression odds and ends means multiple things scattered, that don’t necessarily belong together. That’s how I felt with these songs, especially because this follows a concept album with my previous band. It’s also a word play, a nod to Progressive Music and the prevalence of odd tempos in it, and the album marking the end of Daydream XI and the beginning of Masseti.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?

I wrote and arranged every song in the album. There is a song I wrote back in 2015 and also a song I wrote one day before the recording started, so the songwriting in Odds And Ends spans many years and many moments of my life and career.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

Heir Of The Survivor. It’s the big closing epic on the album and it showcases everything I can do, as a singer, guitarist and arranger. It’s a song I wrote in the attempt to capture a feeling I got from discovering bands in my teenage years. The song is based on The Well Of Ascension, a novel by Brandon Sanderson, and its epic fantasy themes make the sound big, bold, and heroic. It’s one of my favorite songs I ever wrote, for any of my musical projects.

5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD? If there is what it is?

Each song has its own message, its own meaning. To myself, the album represents a new beginning and the abandonment of some of the constraints I had with Daydream XI and my former band members. But once it's out there, I hope every listener can have their own interpretation of lyrics and that the songs make them feel whatever it is they need to feel.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

The opening track has a hook that I’m particularly fond of. “In the name of the serpent, the sinner, the hound, the whore.”

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank specially?

I have to thank Renato Osorio, good friend, co-producer and guest guitarist on the album. In a time when I was considering quitting music altogether, he convinced me I shouldn’t, and this album is the result of that. Also Milton Mendonça, for believing these songs deserved more than just my own two ears and for the ongoing support, both as a manager and a friend. He is the one bringing structure to my chaotic creative process and if someone listens to this album out there, he’s the one to thank. Musically I’ve kept exploring my musical influences in Prog Metal, but this album has sprinkles of some more extreme metal and some more commercial, pop music.

8. Something to add?

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me about this album, and thank you to all your readers. I can’t wait to release this, hear your thoughts about it and, hopefully, see you on the road in the near future!
