Interviews: Detroit Run
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock band Detroit Run from the UK. Check out this band and follow them on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, did you plan it or did it just come out like that?
Coming up with a name for a band can be one of the hardest things to do when starting out. We wanted a name that would stand out, a name that people would remember, a name that feels good when you scream it. “DETROIT RUN” came from us wanting to name the band after a place or landmark. We landed on Detroit as like our hometown(Liverpool), It has a rich music history and we felt right with making that connection between the two cities.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We have all grown up listening to the more alternative side of music. Yes, we each have a very varied music taste, but the ones we share the most between us are alternative, metal, pop pun,k and post hardcore
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
The longest friendship in the band goes to Drummer Wes and Bassist Nathan having known each other for close to a decade, Wes was also Nathan’s best man at his wedding. Singer Tom and Guitarist Gary joined the mix in 2021 and 2022, however, from playing in bands on the circuit over a number of years, we have always crossed paths and it was only a matter of time before we all joined forces
4. Each band member's favourite band?
Tom - Nirvana
Gary - Linkin Park
Nathan - Bring Me The Horizon
Wes - I Prevail
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
The inspiration for the writing process all comes down to the experiences that we have had through life, as well as everything we see around us going on in the world
6. Where was your last gig?
The last gig we played was being part of Planet Rock’s Winters End Festival in Wales
7. Where would you like to play?
We can all agree that Download Festival would be on the list, along with the fact that we would love to take our sound to America and Japan
8. Who would you like to support?
Where to start…
Tom - Bring me the Horizon are the main goal, they’re one of if not the biggest alt metal bands out there right now!
Gary - There are far too many in my list to name, but just a few would be Wage War, Trivium, Bullet and Punk Rock Factory
Nathan - I think everyone would always dream of supporting their idols and I don’t think I am any different. I’ve always wanted to play a great set, come off stage and then watch Bring Me The Horizon.
Wes - My list of bands to support is endless. Just being on stage is what I love, and opening to any band at any level is a great feeling. I would play small stages for the rest of my life if it just meant I could play!
9. Who not?
I think the four of us would agree that there wouldn't be anyone that we would not play with. With any show, you never know who is watching
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Tom - Yes! Performance anxiety is pretty much always there, even for the most experienced musicians. The way I look at it though, it doesn’t show fear, it shows you care, once you’re through that first song, it’s gone!
Gary - I still do. Every so often there will be a show that will fill me with nerves, but when we hit the stage it all goes away. My advice would be that it happens to everyone, but when you start playing and the adrenaline kicks in, you will be fine.
Nathan - Yeah, I’ve definitely felt it. One thing that helped me was realising that the audience isn’t judging every little thing I do, they’re just there to enjoy the music. Once you stop seeing them as critics and more as a group of people who actually want to be there, it takes a lot of pressure off. Another thing is routine, having a little pre-show ritual, whether it’s warming up, or just having a laugh with the band, it helps shift your mind into performance mode. The more you do it, the easier it gets!
Wes - I feel quite comfortable on stage. Growing up with music, and performing since I was young has helped me gain confidence in my abilities on stage, but I can’t lie, the butterflies do sometimes creep up before going on stage!
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Tom - Bring Me The Horizon, Nirvana, Dayseeker, Bad Omens, Linkin Park, Parkway Drive
Gary - Linkin Park, Queen, Green Day, Trivium, Bullet For My Valentine
Nathan - Bring Me The Horizon, I Prevail, Normandie, Falling In Reverse, Wage War, Architects
Wes - Bring Me The Horizon, I Prevail, Asking Alexandria
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Maybe the very first time a fan asked us to take a picture with them. We never expected that to happen and when it did it was pretty alien to us all, it was very cool, but it did take us by surprise. Even now though, whenever someone asks us, it is still as cool as that very first time.
13. What do you think of your fans?
We honestly love all our fans, without them we wouldn’t be where we are today, our fans are practically members of the band - we love it especially when they sing the words of our songs back at us!
14. What do you think of our site?
We really like how you genuinely support underground and up-and-coming bands, giving them a platform to be heard. It’s refreshing to see a site that focuses on the music itself rather than just the biggest names. The track-by-track breakdowns and interviews add a lot of depth, making it feel like you’re getting real insight into the artists and their creative process.
15. Something to add?
We want to take our sound to the masses and redefine what alternative rock is in the modern day
