Behind The Scenes: Embering Effigy - Scarlet Rot (Lyric Video)

Embering Effigy, is a unique blend of genres (Blues, Country, Thrash, Stoner Doom, NWOBHM, and Death Metal) that shouldn't mix, but it comes together to create a new style of thrash, dubbed Southern Fried Thrash. Raf's musical influences include Exhorder, Iron Maiden, and Cannibal Corpse. Jeremy's includes Exodus, Metallica, and Pantera. Mike's includes Slayer, Acid Bat,h and Crowbar. For writing songs, Jeremy or Mike will send each other lyrics and tweak them as needed. Once we have the lyrics, one of us (Jeremy or Mike) will show the other a riff they have come up with. From there, the two of us will work on the basic melody for the song and record it to send to Raf. Raf typically listens to that recording over and over while he's at work, and at the following practice, he'll show us what he's come up with. We'll run through it a few times and see what needs to be changed or cut from the song. After that, it's hammering it out until we are super tight with the new song.

The song Scarlet Rot came about thanks to our old guitarist, Corey. He told us about this audio phenomenon where anything becomes creepy if you slow it down to about 75%-80 % speed. He showed us the version of Tip-Toe Through the Tulips by Tiny Tim that was used in one of the Insidious movies and said how it would make a creepy opening to a song. I (Mike) then told him to replay that cli,p and what came out after was the intro/main riff to Scarlet Rot. Just a mean, slow, get ready to mosh riff. I just envisioned a zombie apocalypse from the first riff. Jeremy and I ended up writing it a lot faster than how it was eventually played with our former drummer, but thanks to Raf, we've been able to kick it into high gear. Although it's only 169 BPM, it feels much faster when we play it live.

For the video, we went with a guy that our brothers in By Way of Fire used, ZulfarjiMB on Instagram. I told him all I want is a zombie apocalypse with hordes roaming the streets and fighting the living. What he came up with was something super unique. It gives off a 1950s pulp fiction comic book vibe, and we love it. At the very end of i,t there is a saying and a sigil. The saying is All Hail the Mighty Darrell. Darrell is our logo, which looks like a deer skull, and the sigil is at the end. There's an entire lore behind it, with H.P. Lovecraft-esque Elder Gods, deer hunting, and Dolly Parton.

As for who we are, we're just a few dudes who love creating music for ourselves and want to share what we love with others who might love it too. We're huge into supporting the local scene and friends in bands of other scenes. We'll share flyers for shows that we're playing, or we're not, or that are on the same day but a totally separate part of the Atlanta Metro than where we're playing. Our thought is that if someone can't get to our show for whatever reason, maybe they can make it to this other show.
