Interviews: Perpetual Paradox
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metalcore band Perpetual Paradox from the UK. Check out this band and follow them on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it just come out like that?
Jorge: It was a mix of both. I had always been drawn to the word Perpetual because of its meaning—something constant, like an unrelenting force. Adrian, on the other hand, loved the idea of paradoxes and thought a double-barrelled name would sound cool.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Ollie: We didn’t exactly choose the genre—it kind of chose us. With so many different influences in the mix, we wanted to challenge ourselves and push our own boundaries. After releasing our last EP, Condemnation, we thought, “What if we go more technical and make every track on the new album its own unique experience?” That’s when Tech Metalcore really became the sound we embraced. Hopefully that’s a journey we’ve managed to reflect on our new album, which comes out on 27/6.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Jorge: Nope—we all came together because of this project! I was the one who started things off with a Facebook post, and Adrian replied, along with a few of the original band members. We really struck gold when Oliver saw the post. We found Will after seeing him play bass at another show. Technically, I knew Andre from work, but I only approached him after he blasted Black Sabbath one night. One thing led to another, and I found out he played bass!
4. Each band member's favourite band?
Adrian: Sleep Token
Oliver: Lorna Shore
Will: Iron Maiden
Andre: Sleep
Jorge: Trivium
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Ollie: Music is our way of commenting on what we see and expressing our views about the world. So a lot of it is inspired by what we see, think, and feel. Furthermore, we want to emulate what our favourite bands are doing. We get inspired by the music we love, so really, we just try to find our own interpretations of what our heroes are doing and apply messages to that.
6. Where was your last gig?
Ollie: Leeds with Veiled and Draconian Reign
7. Where would you like to play?
Jorge: We all have a bucket list of cities and venues…my absolute dream would be Tokyo Dome. A for a festival, WACKEN for sure, or Resurrection Fest! Honestly, touring around, regardless of the venues, is a great dream too. I wanna play in as many different countries as possible!
8. Who would you like to support?
Jorge: Maybe bands like Revocation, Decapitated, Lorna Shore, or Whitechapel! To be honest, we’re pretty open-minded. We’d open for anyone because we see it as an opportunity to gain new fans, expand our network, and learn. So anything from Infant Annihilator to Lady Gaga!
9. Who not?
Ollie: None really. Like above, we’re pretty open-minded. Everything is an opportunity! I guess if there’s a band where we know someone is an asshole or treats other people badly then we’d say no but that’s the only criteria. Be cool, be in it for the music, and let’s have a sick time.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Ollie: None of us has had that experience, really, at least not with this band. We’ve all been in bands for most of our lives, so we’re used to it. Bigger shows, we still get a bit anxious, maybe, but we’ve just learned to trust our abilities and our setup, as well as our capacity to improvise if things go wrong! These days, before any show, it’s just adrenaline and excitement. So as for advice, best thing I’d suggest is just keep playing and playing shows – it’ll be weird at first, but eventually the stage fright disappears as you learn to trust yourself completely. And take everything as a lesson. You’re going to fuck up and make mistakes, everyone does, so take them as lessons instead of failures.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Jorge: We all share a big love for the most iconic groove, deathcore, and metalcore bands.
I would say Lorna Shore, Whitechapel, Killswitch Engage, August Burns Red, Machine Head, Gojira, and Lamb Of God!
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Ollie: We played a show in Cardiff, and someone asked us to sign their prosthetic leg, which we did, of course. Don’t know if weird is the right word to use, but it was definitely memorable!
13. What do you think of your fans?
Jorge: We love them all! As long as they appreciate what we do, what we create or compose, and that end of the day, we see them moving, moshing, and headbanging at a gig, we’re happy!
14. What do you think of our site?
Jorge: We love it. It’s sites like this that keep the scene alive, and we’re stoked to be featured on it!
15. Something to add?
Jorge: Keep supporting your local scene! And keep your eyes peeled for 27/6 when our new album Deathwish comes out!
