Interviews: Secret Rule

On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Modern Metal band Secret Rule from Italy. Check out the interview and follow this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Was it planned, or did it just come out like that?

The band name is usually the first real problem for musicians starting a new project. LOL! The meaning of our name is explained in the booklet of our first album — there's a whole dystopian story behind it. But to summarize: in the resistance, there’s someone who holds the “secret” and others who have the “rule.” The first knows how to save the people, and the others know how to make it happen. It’s a really interesting concept — I definitely recommend reading the full story in the booklet!

2. Why did you choose this genre of music?

That's a hard question. Honestly, we just knew we wanted to be a metal band and brought together our musical experiences, shaped by the bands we’ve loved throughout our lives. The first album actually came from the ashes of songs I had written in the past. Over the course of our 10 albums, we’ve evolved year after year, exploring different shades of the core Secret Rule sound — but always staying true to our identity.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Yes! Andy and Michele (our first bass player) were longtime friends and had played in several bands together. Andy and I also played in another symphonic/Celtic project about ten years before Secret Rule started.

4. Each band member’s favorite band?

Andy: Black Sabbath

Angela: Within Temptation

Sofia: Gojira

Andrea: Nightwish

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Mostly, the things we experience as human beings — how we see society, what we want to change in the world, and what we can't accept. Our main themes are freedom, justice, and equality. We want to give strength to our fans to fight their inner battles — we all have them, and we’re the first to admit it. And of course, we talk about our love for the planet and how it’s crying out for help.

6. Where was your last gig?

In Copenhagen, during the tour with Temperance and Induction. It was awesome! The last show of a tour is always a party.

7. Where would you like to perform?

New York — or anywhere in the USA! That would be amazing. And definitely Japan. I’ve always been fascinated by that country, maybe because I love manga and samurai. LOL!

8. Who would you like to collaborate with?

Each of us might have a different answer, but we’d definitely say Within Temptation or Nightwish.

9. Anyone you wouldn’t want to collaborate with?

Probably Gigi D’Alessio — do you know him? He’s a Neapolitan pop singer.

10. Have any of you ever had stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to overcome it?

Maybe a little anxiety sometimes, but performing live is always a joy. The secret is: don’t worry about trying to impress the audience — just enjoy the moment and smile. Smiling is the secret rule!

11. Which bands have inspired you the most?

Definitely Within Temptation. In recent years, also Falling in Reverse, Papa Roach, In This Moment, and many more. We keep an open mind when it comes to music — it exists to express something, and we love hearing what others have to say. That helps us grow, too.

12. What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

To sell them my tights — or my shoes. LOL!

13. What do you think of your fans?

They’re the reason Secret Rule exists. An amazing community. We love meeting them before or after shows — there's always a great connection. They’re the fuel that keeps us going, even through the effort and sacrifices it takes to keep a band alive in a music industry that isn’t always fair.

14. What do you think of our site?

Strange question... We like it! Are you planning to change it? LOL!

15. Anything else you'd like to add?

Thank you so much for your questions and for having us on your pages! A big greeting to every single metalhead out there — we hope to meet you all somewhere around the world. In the meantime, save these dates: we’ll be playing at Rock Imperium Fest (Spain), Masters of Rock (Czech Republic), and Laurus Nobilis (Portugal) this summer. Stay connected with us on socials — more news is coming soon. See you there!
