Behind The Scenes: Ivy Gardens - Burden (Official Video)
For our last record, Goon, we had made 4 videos with wildly varying concepts. We had some live performance footage, a visual collage of broken glass, and a short film with some bloody and gory special effects on the cheap. We had decided early on for our next record that we didn't want to do anymore "band playing in a room videos", unless this was a full live performance captured honestly in the moment. Miming to a track just never felt right for us.
So for Burden, we got set up in a room, blasted amps and pounded drums into a 12-track recording interface, and got a live recording that sounded like it. Room 208 is actually just at the Hamilton Convention Centre. We had some friends and professional contacts who helped us get that booked. The staff there were using it as a storage room, and as a big brick-walled room, it sounded pretty good. We also recorded a second track, Burn for Murder, which we'll probably be dropping post-tour.
Our friend Luka Kartvelishvili was our camera guy for the day. he has a great rig and got some excellent, very active and reactive camerawork. We kept the lights in the room off, and he had a bright white light strapped to his chest as he flew around with the camera. We've done similar live sessions before and this one-shot, constant movement approach is something I've been enamored with for a while.
I'm very happy with Burden's video, and I think it's a great representation of our live sound. You can hear Joe pushing his voice in a different way than on the record, as he's absorbed in the physicality of beating his kit. I think stuff like that is important to our live sound and I'm glad we could capture it in all its glory.
