Interviews About Albums: Argesk - Moonlight Pyromancy (2025)
1. What can you say about this new CD?
'Moonlight Pyromancy' is our long-awaited second album - an expression of the current iteration of Argesk, of our songwriting progression and the next step on the journey of the project. Our first release with Roscoe on bass and the introduction of a twin guitar sound. While using the template established on 'Realm of Eternal Night', we expand upon it here - introducing a greater variety of influences. A more symphonic and bombastic sound, still driven by our characteristic melodic hooks, and deftly brought to life by the production talents of Chris Taylor and Chris Fielding. Poised to be unleashed upon the blighted earth on 17th October.
2. What is the meaning of the CD name?
'Moonlight Pyromancy' aims to encapsulate a feeling evoked by the power of the music itself, capturing the imagery downloaded into my mind from another world... an ineffable realm beyond our sensory perception. It is an expression beyond mere mortal words, a manifestation originating beyond the veil of the material... Those who have seen and felt the delights of this realm, and the power of its ever-burning immortal flame, need no further explanation.
3. Which one is the composer of the CD?
All members of Argesk have composed the material presented here. All members have meticulously constructed their individual components, assembling the great whole through collaborative labour. The driving forces for each piece have varied - for example, 'Tempest' is based primarily on a synth line written by Leth, and 'Black Castle Waltz' was an expansion of a riff idea presented by Roscoe.
Guitars are primarily composed by me, but the introduction of Aidan has brought a new element of songwriting, which we are keen to explore.
4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?
Each of our members would likely have a different answer. For my part, the title track, 'Moonlight Pyromancy', is, to me, a microcosm of everything I want from Argesk as a musical venture. All elements work together to create a darkly euphoric anthem to arcane mastery. From my perspective, the riffs, lyrics and vocal performance are among my best to date.
5. Is there a special message on this CD? If there is, what is it?
Self-actualisation lies at the heart of Argesk. While our music and imagery are fantastical and escapist, there is an introspective element to our art; the listener is encouraged to fulfil their own potential, pursue their True Will, unfettered by all constraints. What this means to each listener is deeply personal, and it is up to them to discover.
6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?
I'm proud of all the lyrics on this album, so it's hard to choose just one part to share. However, I like the occult and dark natural imagery in the first verse of 'Moonlight Pyromancy'...
'Nocturne beauty cloaked in shadow, petrichor and burning pine
Fill me with unholy fervour, leaping flame and moonlight shine
Raising hell through ancient hexes, draw the power of the stars
Which align as lustrous Venus shalt receive the spear of Mars'
7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank specially?
Musically, this album has many influences - Argesk started with the template of melodic black metal bands who came before us, such as Emperor, Dissection, Hecate Enthroned and Ancient. This album takes these influences and adds experimentation and compositional flair, adding elements from unexpected places to allow each piece to soar.
For example, the solo in 'Accursed Victory' is infused with the arena-rock swagger of bands like WASP; 'Invocation' has a clear 80s goth flair; 'Servant of Fire's main riff is essentially 'Dissection plays punk' - I could go on...
The orchestral synths are practically cinematic in scope, and the bass solo on 'Black Castle Waltz' is infused with folk.
Lyrically, my inspiration comes from nature, from Gothic literature, film and imagery; from my own travels upon the astral plane during meditation and from the power of the arcane arts.
In terms of people I'd like to thank - my bandmates for their unwavering dedication to this art, Veronika for all of her work behind the merch table and in the driver's seat; Chris Taylor, Chris Fielding and Jake Boughton for the production, my family and friends for their support - and of course, to all the fans who enjoy and support our music. Your support means the world!
