Interviews About Albums: Cytolysis - Surge Of Cruelty (2025)

In this new interview, we sat down with the Technical Death Metal/Brutal Death Metal band Cytolysis to ask questions about their album, "Surge Of Cruelty".

1. What can you say about this new CD?

“Surge of Cruelty” is the second full-length album from Cytolysis, my solo project driven by horror themes, crushing death metal riffs, heavy grooves, and brutal vocal styles. Following the release of “Portraits of Malevolence” in 2020, I felt a surge of inspiration to dive deeper into this sound. Having composed music for over 30 years, I’m always exploring fresh, creative ways to bring the ideas in my head to life. One day, a vivid vision sparked what became Cytolysis—a unique blend of intensity and atmosphere. While this style diverges from the majority of my other work, “Surge of Cruelty” stands as a distinct, well-defined piece of art that I’m thrilled to share.

2. What is the meaning of the CD name?

“Surge of Cruelty” is both a song title from the album and its second single. I chose it as the album’s name because it captures the essence of the project, both musically and lyrically. Each track tells a unique story, delving into the darker, crueler facets of humanity. Often, even the most corrupt individuals aren’t constantly at their worst—it’s an emotional buildup, a festering darkness left unaddressed. When that surge of anger or cruelty finally erupts, it can leave victims in its wake. The title reflects this intense, explosive moment that defines the album’s themes.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD?

I am the sole member of Cytolysis. I compose and perform all parts for guitar, bass, drums, vocals, and samples. I am also the engineer and master of the albums in my studio, House of Grind.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

The title track, “Surge of Cruelty,” was a standout for me. It encompasses all the elements of Cytolysis, from grooves to odd time signatures, to blast beats and death metal-style guitar riffing. Outside of that, “Devout Sacrifice” with guest vocals from Mac Smith, and “Tortured Flesh” with guest vocals from Adam Mason stand out to me.

5. Is there a special message on this CD? If there is what it is?

Cytolysis is a conceptual project, so it doesn’t carry a personal message in the traditional sense. Instead, each song weaves its own fictional tale of horror or despair, drawing from my lifelong fascination with dark movies and stories. These narratives offer a gritty glimpse into the psychology of humanity—unpleasant at times, but undeniably real. Exploring these themes allows me to better understand the world and communicate its complexities through music with raw, evocative impact.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

From the track “Devout Sacrifice” –
“Brought into a world of veiled lies
Kept away from dissenting types of thought
Searching for constant approval, of those commanding your life
There is only one way, never question the word
obedience expected, it is the way to salvation”

I chose these lyrics because they reflect the control systems that permeate our world, often unnoticed. Many of us are raised within these structures, unaware of the broader perspectives beyond our environment. People can live in torment, not realizing a freer, more fulfilling life exists outside their bubble. Control takes many forms, and I believe it’s vital for everyone to gain a deeper understanding of the world to make empowered choices for themselves.

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

With Cytolysis, as mentioned earlier, each song on “Surge of Cruelty” and the previous album, “Portraits of Malevolence,” tells a fictional story. That said, I’m deeply inspired by the human experience. Though these tales are fictional, they weave in very real elements of pain, sorrow, and suffering—emotions and challenges millions face daily. Crafting these stories heightens my awareness of the diverse emotions we all navigate, grounding the music in something raw and relatable.

Musically, Cytolysis stands out by incorporating groove elements that differ from most of my past work. I’ve played some of the fastest, most technical music out there, which I love, but Cytolysis lets me explore heaviness in a fresh way. Taking on lead vocals is an exciting challenge, and maintaining my skills across all elements—playing, composing, and singing—demands dedication but brings immense reward. I’m inspired by the creative process itself, the vision of building a new project, and the chance to push my artistry forward. No specific thanks this time —just gratitude for the journey and the ability to keep creating.

8. Something to add?

I’d like to thank you for the chance to dive into this album and share its story. The creative process is something I truly cherish, and I’m always striving to craft the best music possible. I’ve got several other projects and albums in the works, but when the inspiration strikes, I might just sit down and write another Cytolysis chapter.

For now, I invite everyone to follow my journey on my channel at https://www.youtube.com/@House_of_Grind. It’s the best spot to keep up with my latest work and see what I’m diving into next. Thanks again for this awesome conversation!
