[Spanish]: Pocas bandas pueden presumir de haber dejado una huella tan profunda en la historia del rock español como Obús. Formados a principios de los 80, pasaron rápidamente de los escenarios underground a la fama nacional, convirtiéndose en uno de los nombres más influyentes del heavy metal español. Con más de cuatro décadas de carrera, discos de oro y diamante, y cientos de conciertos dentro y fuera de España, Obús siguen siendo una leyenda viva del rock.

En esta entrevista exclusiva, charlamos con la banda para repasar sus inicios, los obstáculos superados y los hitos que marcaron su trayectoria. Desde conciertos inolvidables y giras alocadas hasta reflexiones sobre su legado y el futuro, Obús nos cuenta lo que significa mantener viva la llama del rock tras tantos años.

[English]: Few bands can claim to have left such a deep mark on Spanish rock history as Obús. Formed in the early 80s, the band quickly rose from underground stages to nationwide fame, becoming one of the most influential names in Spanish heavy metal. With a career spanning more than four decades, gold and diamond records, and countless concerts at home and abroad, Obús remain a living legend of rock.

In this exclusive interview, we sit down with the band to revisit their beginnings, the challenges they overcame, and the milestones that shaped their path. From unforgettable concerts and wild tours to reflections on their legacy and the future, Obús open up about what it means to keep the flame of rock burning after so many years.

1. ¿Cómo fueron los primeros días de Obús en la escena del rock español? How were Obús’ early days in the Spanish rock scene?

[Spanish]: Fueron apasionantes, fue una explosión total porque una banda desconocida que en poco tiempo pudo recorrer todo el país fue el sueño cumplido de unos chavales jóvenes que empiezan en el rock and roll y tienen las ganas de comerse el mundo.

[English]: They were excited, it was a total explosion because an unknown band that in a short time managed to tour the whole country was the dream come true for a group of young guys starting out in rock and roll, eager to conquer the world.

2. ¿Qué obstáculos encontraron al inicio y cómo los superaron? What obstacles did you face at the beginning, and how did you overcome them?

[Spanish]: Los obstáculos que encuentran las bandas cuando comiencen son ir rogando por tocar donde puedas, haciendo tus marcas. A nosotros nos llegó y nunca hay que echarse atrás hasta conseguir algo. Hay que seguir ahí trabajando, luchando y algunas veces se obtiene una recompensa. El triunfo no pasa nada por el dinero.

[English]: The obstacles bands face at the start are begging to play wherever they can, making their mark. That happened to us, too, and you can never back down until you achieve something. You must keep working, keep fighting, and sometimes you get rewarded. Success has nothing to do with money.

3. ¿Qué recuerdos guardan de su primer gran concierto? What memories do you keep from your first big concert?

[Spanish]: Bueno, uno de los conciertos más grandes que recuerdo fue en Madrid, en el pabellón de deportes del Real Madrid, un local que ya no existe. Era donde se presentaban las grandes bandas internacionales, yo personalmente allí vi a todos, Queen, Scorpions, Iron Maiden… sacamos nuestro primer disco y nada más, salimos con un promotor de Madrid y listo.

[English]: One of the biggest concerts I remember was in Madrid, at the Real Madrid Sports Pavilion, a venue that no longer exists. That’s where the big international bands performed—I personally saw everyone there: Queen, Scorpions, Iron Maiden… We released our first album, teamed up with a local promoter in Madrid, and that was it.

4. ¿Cuál creen que fue el punto de inflexión que los llevó al estrellato? What do you think was the turning point that led you to stardom?

[Spanish]: Hacer ese local emblemático, lo llenamos hasta la bandera y la verdad es que fue una noche inolvidable. En poco tiempo me vi como protagonista. Fue una noche tremenda, y bueno, el punto de inflexión fue conectar con la gente y con la juventud de la época en cuanto a música y también en cuanto a letras que contaban cosas que todo el mundo entendía y la conexión fue total y eso es lo que nos catapultó hasta lo más alto.

[English]: Playing that iconic venue, which we filled to the brim, was truly unforgettable. Suddenly, I found myself in the spotlight. It was an incredible night, and the turning point was connecting with people and with the youth of the time, through both the music and the lyrics that spoke about things everyone understood. That total connection is what catapulted us to the top.

5. ¿Qué álbum consideran más representativo de su carrera y por qué? Which album do you consider the most representative of your career, and why?

[Spanish]: Bueno, lógicamente, el primero que fue con el que nos dimos a conocer. En todas las listas número uno y bueno quedamos súper satisfechos. Es un álbum muy importante para nosotros en cuanto a sonido.

[English]: Obviously, the first one, because it was the one that introduced us to the world. It hit number one on all the charts, and we were extremely satisfied. It’s a very important album for us in terms of sound.

6. ¿Cómo ha evolucionado su sonido desde los 80 hasta hoy? How has your sound evolved from the 80s until today?

[Spanish]: Hemos procurado siempre mantener nuestro estilo. Hemos aprovechado el avance de la tecnología, hay mejores medios de grabación y nosotros los aprovechamos, pero siempre intentando que el sello y el sonido y la forma de hacer se mantengan en cuanto a los procesos de composición.

[English]: We have always tried to maintain our style. We’ve taken advantage of advances in technology; there are better recording tools now, and we use them, but always making sure that our signature sound and our way of creating remain intact throughout the composition process.

7. ¿Qué proceso siguen a la hora de componer letras y música? What is your process when writing lyrics and music?

[Spanish]: Componemos la música y la melodía de voz. Esa melodía se le encaja una letra en español respetando las sílabas y los espacios de esa letra. Así es como solemos trabajar, hay otras bandas que lo hacen al revés, hacen primero una letra y luego ahí le añaden la música y una melodía, pero nosotros trabajamos de esta manera.

[English]: We compose the music and the vocal melody first. Then we fit Spanish lyrics into that melody, respecting the syllables and the phrasing. That’s how we usually work. Other bands do it the other way around—they write the lyrics first and then add the music and melody—but we prefer this method.

8. ¿Hay alguna canción que ya no soporten tocar pero el público siempre pide? Is there any song you can’t stand playing anymore, but the audience always asks for?

[Spanish]: Pues hay algunas canciones que gustan más que otras y de las canciones que nos pide el público las seguimos tocando y nunca nos cansaremos, todo lo contrario, estamos súper agradecidos a esas canciones.

[English]: Well, there are songs that people like more than others, and from the ones the audience requests, we keep playing them, and we never get tired. On the contrary, we are extremely grateful for those songs.

9. ¿Qué opinan del estado actual del metal en España? What do you think about the current state of metal in Spain?

[Spanish]: Bueno, en cuanto al momento actual del metal, aquí pues, en fin, no cabe duda de que la mejor época fueron los inicios. Ahora hay grandes bandas que siguen funcionando, clásicas, algunas nuevas que están funcionando muy bien. Nosotros personalmente no nos podemos quejar porque seguimos haciendo una cantidad de conciertos todos los años, cuentan con nosotros en grandes festivales y siguen también un gran número de fans siguiéndolos. Aquí en España lo veo con salud suficiente como para seguir caminando.

[English]: Well, regarding the current state of metal here, there’s no doubt that the best era was the beginning. Now there are still great bands going strong, both classic ones and some new ones that are doing very well. Personally, we can’t complain because we keep playing many shows every year, we’re invited to major festivals, and we still have a huge fanbase following us. In Spain, I see the scene as healthy enough to keep moving forward.

10. ¿Qué bandas jóvenes creen que están haciendo las cosas bien? Which young bands do you think are doing things right?

[Spanish]: Bueno, y la cantidad de bandas jóvenes que nos encontramos en festivales y demás y que ves que están trabajando duro. Te sorprende que igual van muy jóvenes, que tengan una calidad muy grande musicalmente. Ahora ves a gente jovencísima con un nivel técnico tremendo.

[English]: There are plenty of young bands we come across at festivals and elsewhere, and you can see they’re working hard. It’s surprising that even at such a young age, they already have great musical quality. Nowadays, you see very young people with tremendous technical skills.

11. ¿Se sienten reconocidos por la industria musical española? Do you feel recognized by the Spanish music industry?

[Spanish]: De todas formas, personalmente bueno igual por los años, me quedé un poco anclado en la música de finales de los ‘60, ‘70 y ‘80 que es la que más escucho. La gente reconoce el trabajo que hemos hecho y lo que significa que usen la música en España. Entonces en ese sentido se nos reconoce el trabajo que hemos hecho y tenemos una cantidad de gente que respeta nuestro trabajo.

[English]: Personally, maybe because of the years, I stayed a bit anchored in the music of the late ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, which is what I listen to the most. People do recognize the work we’ve done and what it means for Spanish music. In that sense, our work is acknowledged, and many people respect what we’ve achieved.

12. ¿Qué legado creen que deja Obús en la historia del rock nacional? What legacy do you think Obús leaves in the history of Spanish rock?

[Spanish]: Bueno el legado es de una banda que que inició aquí en España y que vendimos cantidad de discos; de oro, disco de diamante, hemos vendido más de un millón de discos. Y eso se nos tiene en cuenta y cuando coincidimos en festivales con bandas más jóvenes, pues muchas de ellas dicen que fuimos ejemplo y que por nosotros se iniciaron en esto y que reconocen nuestra labor, que iniciamos un camino que ellos ahora siguen. Entonces en ese sentido, pues creo que nuestro legado está muy presente.

[English]: Well, the legacy is that of a band that started here in Spain and sold a huge number of records: gold records, diamond records—we’ve sold over a million albums. That is acknowledged, and when we meet younger bands at festivals, many of them tell us that we were an example, that they got started because of us, and that they recognize the path we opened for them to follow. So in that sense, I think our legacy is very present.

13. ¿Cuál ha sido la anécdota más loca que han vivido en una gira? What’s the craziest story you’ve experienced on tour?

[Spanish]: Bueno, anécdotas ha habido muchas, no, y en fin unas muy locas: la primera vez que fuimos a América, a Venezuela, fue tremendo… ¡una locura los primeros viajes! Pues ya sabes, juventud y demás, grandes fiestas que sabías que empezaban y no cuando acababan (risas). Esos años de juventud en que no te ponías límites… ahora las cosas no las tomamos con más tranquilidad, tenemos que dosificar las fuerzas en cuanto a desparramos y lo que queremos es mantenernos. Afortunadamente tenemos salud y lo más importante, ganas también, que seguimos conservando.

[English]: Well, there have been many stories, some really crazy ones. The first time we went to America, to Venezuela, it was wild… the first trips were total madness! You know, youth and all that—huge parties that you knew when they started but never when they ended (laughs). Those were years when you didn’t set limits… Now we take things more calmly, we need to save our energy, and what we want is to keep going. Luckily, we still have our health and, most importantly, the desire to continue.

14. ¿Hay alguna ciudad o público que siempre recuerda con cariño especial? Is there a city or audience you always remember with special affection?

[Spanish]: Lógicamente, nuestra ciudad Madrid, pero también en Barcelona, en general en toda España, se nos ha tratado muy bien. Y pues lo que te comentaba antes, nuestro primer concierto en América en el año 84 en Venezuela en la ciudad de Caracas que fue tremendo fue salir de nuestro país y sorprendernos la cantidad de gente que nos seguía allí, entonces es cierto que no se olvidarán, fueron muy muy especiales.

[English]: Obviously, our city, Madrid, but also Barcelona, and in general, we’ve been treated very well all over Spain. And as I mentioned before, our first concert in America in 1984, in Caracas, Venezuela, was incredible. Leaving our country and being surprised by the number of people who followed us there was unforgettable. Those shows were very, very special.

15. ¿Cómo ha cambiado la vida de gira con los años? How has life on tour changed over the years?

[Spanish]: Las giras ahora, con los medios que contamos, hacen que sean más cómodos a los primeros años, pues la cantidad de conciertos es más limitada, y las formas de transporte ahora son muchísimo más cómodas, más relajadas. Antes salías de gira y después del concierto seguía de fiesta por ahí, muchas veces aparecías en el hotel ya por la mañana.

[English]: Tours now, with the resources we have, are much more comfortable than in the early years. There are fewer shows, and the means of transportation are way more comfortable and relaxed. Back then, you’d go on tour and after the concert you’d keep partying all night, often showing up at the hotel in the morning.

16. ¿En qué están trabajando actualmente? What are you currently working on?

[Spanish]: Bueno, estamos trabajando en la próxima gira, haremos un adelanto también de algún videoclip con una canción nueva, y haremos un adelanto con una canción nueva que puede ser preámbulo de un disco completo.

[English]: We’re working on our upcoming tour. We’ll also release a preview video clip with a new song, which may serve as a prelude to a full album.

18. ¿Qué pueden esperar los fans de Obús en esta nueva etapa? What can Obús fans expect in this new stage?

[Spanish]: Bueno, nuestros fans en esta etapa, los que esperan de nosotros, siendo un grupo clásico, es que hagamos un repaso general a toda nuestra carrera y que toquemos todos los hits que tenemos. Yo, como público que soy, también de bandas clásicas, cuando voy a un concierto, quiero escuchar sus canciones clásicas igual.

[English]: Well, since we are a classic band, our fans expect us to give a full overview of our career and play all our hits. As a fan of classic bands myself, when I go to their concerts, I also want to hear their classics—so we understand that feeling.

19. ¿Cómo ven su futuro como banda después de tantas décadas? How do you see your future as a band after so many decades?

[Spanish]: Nos encontramos bien, no hacemos planes como es lógico de muchos años, entonces estamos aprovechando el tiempo que se nos regala, es un tiempo que intentamos disfrutar al máximo, no hay planteamientos a muy largo plazo aunque espero que todavía nos queden bastantes años para disfrutar de esto de la música.

[English]: We feel good. We don’t make very long-term plans, logically, so we’re making the most of the time we’re given. It’s a time we try to enjoy to the fullest. There are no far-reaching plans, though I do hope we still have plenty of years left to enjoy music.

20. ¿Qué le dirían hoy al joven Fortu que empezaba en los 80? What would you say today to young Fortu, just starting out in the 80s?

[Spanish]: Le diría pues que hizo muy bien, hizo muy bien formar una banda y que hizo las cosas bien porque todo funcionó y que gracias a ese chaval de los años ‘80, pues es que este señor rockero veterano hoy aquí todavía está haciendo música.

[English]: I’d say he did very well—he made the right choice forming a band, and he did things right because everything worked out. Thanks to that young kid from the ’80s, this veteran rocker is still here today making music.

21. ¿Cuál es el mayor orgullo que les ha dado Obús? What is the greatest pride Obús has given you?

[Spanish]: Pues poder dedicarme a la música, haberme dado la oportunidad de haber conocido muchas ciudades, conocer muchísimos amigos, muchos países y es ha sido lo más maravilloso, el sueño que tiene todo el mundo cuando empieza en esto, que es tener la fortuna, la suerte de poder dedicarse a ello, vivir de ello y conocer tantas tantos lugares y tantas gentes distinta.

[English]: Being able to dedicate myself to music, having the opportunity to visit many cities, meet countless friends, and travel to many countries—that has been the most wonderful thing. It’s the dream everyone has when they start out: to be lucky enough to dedicate themselves to it, live from it, and discover so many places and different people.

22. ¿Qué mensaje quieren dejarle a sus fans de toda la vida? What message would you like to leave for your lifelong fans?

[Spanish]: Es que intentamos dejarnos la piel en cada concierto, que vamos a intentar que la gente que pague un boleto se lo pasen lo mejor posible y que tengan una noche de 100% puro rock and roll. Espero no defraudarlos nunca. Un abrazo muy fuerte a todos nuestros amigos.

[English]: We try to give our all at every concert. We want everyone who buys a ticket to have the best possible time and enjoy a night of 100% pure rock and roll. I hope we never let them down. A big hug to all our friends.
