Interviews: Orchid Symmetry

On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock band Orchid Symmetry from the UK. Check out the interview and follow this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? You planned it, or did it just come out like that?

Will (Bass): I was throwing around ideas about orchids, something delicate but resilient.

Chris (Drums): I’ve always liked the concept of symmetry, that balance and order in chaos.

Damo (Guitar, Lead Vocals): So I just stitched those two ideas together into Orchid Symmetry, and it just clicked for all of us.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Damo: Chris and I grew up playing fast punk; Hives, Blink-182, that kind of thing. When we started this band, we wanted more power, more progression, something that could breathe a bit more.

Chris: Will brought a more melodic and groove-driven approach that helped slow us down and round us out.

Will: Yeah, it all came together naturally; we didn’t really plan the genre; it just evolved out of who we are and what we like.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Chris: Damo and I met through a band advertising site.

Damo: But Will and I had worked together before at a previous job, so once I realised Chris and I had something, I got Will on board to complete the line-up.

4. Each band member’s favourite band?

Damo: The Hives — always loved their energy.

Will: Pendulum — their rhythms and atmosphere are unmatched.

Chris: Queens of the Stone Age — simple but devastatingly effective.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Damo: I draw from my own past, from darker parts of my mind and personal demons; it’s cathartic and honest.

Chris: Same here. Things I can’t really say in everyday life, frustrations and resentments, they all come out in music.

6. Where was your last gig?

Chris: The Junction in Plymouth, supporting Mother Vulture. Amazing venue, good crowd, brilliant vibe.

7. Where would you like to play?

Will: Festivals, definitely. The best atmosphere, and you’re playing for people who really love discovering new music.

8. Who would you like to support?

Damo: Queens of the Stone Age… or Muse. We could put together a set that’d work well for their fans.

9. Who not?

Chris: I don’t think we’d say no to much, honestly. Maybe not someone way too mellow — we wouldn’t want to kill their vibe!

10. Have any of you suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners?

Will: Not really, just the usual nerves before a show. We pump each other up, and once we start playin,g it turns into energy.

Chris: Best advice? Practise until you can’t get it wrong, not just until you get it right. And when mistakes happen, because they always do, just smile and keep going. People love seeing the human side of musicians, too.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Damo: The Hives — their energy is infectious, and that’s what I try to bring.

Chris: Queens of the Stone Age and Muse — proving that simple, solid parts can have the biggest impact.

Will: Pendulum — their rhythm section locks everything down so the melodies can really shine. That subtle strength is inspiring.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Damo: Honestly, nothing too wild yet. I’m usually the one making weird requests…

13. What do you think of your fans?

Chris: Amazing. A few of them even travel serious distances to see us play. That kind of support is priceless and keeps us going.

14. What do you think of our site?

Will: We love it. Any platform that gives grassroots bands a chance to shine is alright by us. Thanks for putting in the effort and caring about the little guys.

15. Something to add?

Damo: Just a massive thank you to everyone who’s listened, come to shows, bought a shirt, or even just said hi. It all means more than we can put into words. If you’re reading this — come find us at a gig, we’d love to meet you.
