Interviews: Silver Dollar Room
On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock band Silver Dollar Room from Scotland. Check out the interview and follow this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it just come out like that?
We are all huge movie fans, especially when it comes to 80s and 90s cinema. Our name pays homage to the original name of the ‘Blue Oyster Bar’ from the Police Academy films.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Alternative rock has a special place in each of our hearts as we grew up listening to the genre in the 90s. Influenced by iconic bands such as Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins ,and the Manic Street Preachers, we all had and still have a deep connection with this type of music.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
The band was founded in 2023 by our guitarist/producer, Jamie, and drummer Douglas. We originally envisioned it as a studio project, but it expanded in 2024, bringing in the talents of John on vocals, Lisa Aird on bass, and Dan Covin on rhythm guitar. Over time, the lineup has evolved, with Jen Bain replacing Dan on rhythm guitar, and Ryan Shearer taking over bass duties from Lisa.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
John – Sly and the Family Stone
Jamie – Alice in Chains
Douglas – The Smashing Pumpkins
Jen – Highly Suspect
Ryan – Nine Inch Nails
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Good question! I guess a combination of things. From a musical point of view, the ability to compose something that reflects your emotions, personal experiences, and self-expression is very important. It’s almost like you get to listen to that raw energy back and have time to process it, coming to peace with certain things. From a lyrical point of view, you can really express how you feel regarding your lived experiences, historical awareness, and reaction to current events, to name but a few.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was at the Mash House in Edinburgh, and we’re excited to be back there for our album launch on September 13th. Tickets are on sale now!
7. Where would you like to play?
A few, to be honest, The Usher Hall in Edinburgh – Grand, historic, and excellent acoustics. The Barrowlands Ballroom in Glasgow, arguably the most iconic venue in Scotland, is legendary among artists and fans alike. King Tut’s Wah-Wah Hut, also in Glasgow, is a real rite of passage for bands and legendary on the live music scene.
8. Who would you like to support?
Wunderhorse has, dynamic stage presence, energetic live shows, and we would hopefully appeal to their fanbase.
9. Who not?
Insane Clown Posse, I don’t think we could pull off the masks!
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
A few of us have experienced stage fright; it’s only natural. The key to overcoming it is through preparation and visualising how you want the performance to unfold. Confidence on stage stems from being well prepared. Think of it this way: a boxer would never step into the ring without training, and musicians should hold themselves to the same standard.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
We take inspiration from early Delta Blues like Robert Johnson & Son House. Also, the legends who shaped music in their own way. Prince, Smashing Pumpkins, Manic Street Preachers, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Catherine Wheel, and Hundred Reasons, to name but a few.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Probably a towel soaked in sweat, don’t ask!
13. What do you think of your fans?
We may not have a huge fan base, but those who do support us are deeply passionate about our music. They embrace our live performances and inspire us to continuously improve both on stage and in the studio.
14. What do you think of our site?
We absolutely love your website! It offers a fantastic range of content to explore. We’re especially fond of the ‘Behind the Artworks’ section. It provides great insight into the origins of various pieces and helps you understand certain themes and ideas. The ‘Countries’ section is also excellent, offering a deep dive into the origins of specific releases. Outstanding work all around.
15. Something to add?
Our next single, ‘Normal People’, is out on September 5th, followed by our second album, ‘It Can’t Rain All the Time’, on September 12th. We’d love for you to give them a listen. Thank you for your time and support.
