Interviews About Albums: KARU - Perdition (2025)

In this new interview, we sat down with the Finnish Symphonic Death Metal band KARU to ask questions about their album, "Perdition".

1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?

"Perdition" is a true cinematic metal saga; it has big, multi-part songs, killer metal, and massive orchestration. Fans of epic metal will surely enjoy this album.

2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?

"Perdition" in a literal sense means eternal damnation for a sinful person. The key here is that the damnation was self-caused by the individual, and this is the central theme that the album revolves around. The main character is the antagonist of his village, and after he's left to fend for himself in the wilderness, he makes all the wrong choices that could have been avoided if he had more character. So, even though the album is wrapped in fantasy and demons and spirits, the central theme is still quite universal.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?

We all (Niko, Kalle, Toni) composed and produced the album together. Niko is the one who comes up with the concept for the record and oversees the composition process so that the music tells the story as accurately as possible.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

"Trail of Fire" is epic, over the top, and has some of the best riffs in our catalogue.

5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD? If there is what it is?

No message, just pure escapism through stories and music.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

The chorus of "Shadow War" has some powerful lines in it, especially during our live shows when the whole band is growling some of the parts:

A lifetime of lies
Eternal rain shall fall upon your souls
The end has come
A world without your light
The shores shall drown in blood
And our lies won’t hold
Against their wrath

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, or someone you'd love to thank especially?

KARU has always been inspired by the fundamental Finnish experience of coldness, nature, and having to look a bit to find beauty. This album in particular was inspired by (not a complete list) Wintersun, The Witcher book series, The Last Samurai, Memoirs of a Geisha, and The Ghost of Tsushima OST by Ilan Eshkeri.

8. Something to add?

Thank you for listening to our music. We'll see you at the shows!
