Track By Tracks: Meteora - In This Silence (2025)

1. In This Silence:

Atilla: The first thing that I had for ’In this Silence’ were the bells in the intro, and the first vocal line of the chorus. Our guitarists told me they would like some more guitar heavy(and in general heavier) songs, so I thought I’d trymy self writing something leaning toward melodeath. It is a song of despair and anger, and I think the music captures these feelings quite nicely. Having all three of us sing in this one also adds to the little bit of chaos that this track represents.

I wrote the lyrics back in the fall of 2023. Here in Hungary, we have a political party that has been reigning without many boundaries for 15 years now. They are alienating us from the rest of Europe, slowly but surely building down democracy and stirring hate against both foreigners and their own citizens just to stay in power. It explores the feeling of hopelessness that nothing will change, and the inner struggle to try to endure here or leave the country for a better future.

2. Rebirth:

Dani Baranya (music): The original idea wasn’t meant to be a Meteora song — it was for my own thrash-metalcore solo project. But I wanted to have a personal song on the album, so I sat down with a MIDI controller to create a symphonic base. This became the chorus of Rebirth. Then it occurred to me that guitar parts would fit well as a continuation, so I made the symphonic backing for those too, merged them, and it worked. I still needed a bridge and a solo section, so I picked up the guitar and came up with the first versions in about an hour, later refining them once the full song was done. For the ending, not very creatively, I chose a modulation and slightly reworked some of the previous riffs. I wrote the drum base, which Gábor spiced up with his own taste and style. Ati made some tweaks to the structure (thanks for that! ), and then the demo was ready. Noémi wrote the lyrics and the vocal lines for it, and Máté’s extreme vocals just clicked — the final version you hear in the song was nailed within the first few tries. It turned out a bit different from the usual complex Meteora songs Attila writes, but we need tracks like this too!

Noémi (lyrics): The lyrics are basically about personal growth and the way of becoming an adult. The familiar world of fantasy and ideas is more and more replaced by a yet foreign, tangible reality. It is described as a painful, struggling process, part of which is also overcoming childhood traumas.

3. Free:

Atilla: The song was meant to be a kinda lighthearted power metalish track. I was messing around on the keyboard with a violin patch one afternoon, wanting to write a catchy and kind melody, and that turned out to be the chorus. It is really easy, has a good sing-along feel, and I’m pretty sure it will be a staple point in our shows moving forward. The lyrics are in high contrast with the instrumental parts; it has a rather serious topic. In more and more parts of the worl,d populist leaders are destroying our society, turning friend against friend, neighbour against neighbour just to solidify their power, and their greatest asset is their propaganda. Here in Hungary, all the public services are directly controlled by the government, including the media, and thus their narrative (that isn’t necessarily the truth) is being streamed from the money of the taxpayers. ’Free’ is a song about enduring hardships and about the certainty that this regime will not last forever. We also had an animated video made for this one by Dronicon Films, and it is a really fun watch about a cute rabbit on her quest for revenge against the pig overlords.

4. Ghosts:

Atilla (music): Ghosts is my personal favorite track from the EP. It was a challenge as a songwriter because it is kinda far away from my comfort zone with its progressive chord progressions and complicated chords, not the usual triads we work with most of the time in metal music. Making it work was a really fun experience. First, the piano was written, which is the basis of the whole song. After that came the orchestral parts, then the guitars and drums, and in the end, Noémi wrote her beautiful lyrics for the song as well as her melodies. And to put the cherry on top, Dani did an amazing job with the solo.

Noémi (lyrics): The speaker relives events from the past over and over again, as she visits a place where she lost someone important to her. She sees herself and the other there, almost talking to imaginary figures, but in reality, outside of the familiar surroundings, she only perceives emptiness. At the end of the chorus, she expresses her hope and faith despite the painful loss she has experienced: “… I know that somehow we’re connected”.
