Behind The Tracks: The Home Grown - Tide (Single) (2025)
“Tide” started out as a bit of a throwaway riff I was using to warm up on guitar. It wasn’t meant to be anything, just this moody verse groove that I couldn’t shake off. The idea for the song came after that, built around a fictional argument with my partner about my lack of self-control and staying sober. It’s about the push and pull between knowing I should keep it together and the temptation to let everything wash away for a bit. The chorus came together once I added the lead line – I’d been wanting something with that kind of interplay for a while, something where the guitars carry a bit more emotion under the surface. The song’s called “Tide” because it’s that constant back-and-forth – trying to stay steady while everything’s pulling at you.
We recorded it ourselves in our rehearsal space, which is basically a converted barn on an old farm that we rent out. It’s nothing fancy – just our live gear and some very basic recording setup – but that rawness suits the song. I produced, mixed, and mastered it myself. The drums went down first, then we got caught up in a run of gigs before finishing the rest. Once everything was tracked, it came together pretty quickly. The backing vocals and the waves crashing at the start and end were last-minute ideas – the waves were actually James’ suggestion, and they really set the mood. The whole thing ended up with this melancholic, gritty feel that fits perfectly with the lyrics. It’s got a bit of that Queens of the Stone Age “I Sat by the Ocean” vibe, so I leant into that while writing and recording it.
