Interviews: Bogwrought
On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Melodic Metal band, Bogwrought, from the USA. Check out the interview and follow this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Was it planned, or did it just happen organically?
The name Bogwrought came from our Drummer Tim and Former Guitarist Nemo while drinking at a bar one night after practice. We were spitballing names and wanted something bog or swamp related, then one of us said "wrought from the bog," and it kinda just stuck.
2. Why did you choose to play this genre?
Drummer Tim: For me personally, metal has been my favorite genre since I was young. The music really spoke to me as a teenager and helped me get through some tough times
Vocalist Carrie: I have always loved metal music, and when I decided I wanted to be in a band, it just felt right to play metal. It has always called to me and given me great joy to play and perform. I think my favorite part is the energy and messages metal gives off.
3. Did you know each other before forming the band?
Drummer Tim: Nemo (Original Lead Guitar Player), Tene (Original Bass Player), and I knew each other from UMass Dartmouth. Nemo and I were roommates all 4 years, and Tene was in the same major and research group as me.
Vocalist Carrie: I became friends with the boys, actually, way before joining the band. Originally, we had a lovely vocalist called Rocco who left to start a family. When he was still in the band, I used to come to practice to hang out, and we would all see each other at local shows all the time. I formed a great friendship with all the members, and that was a huge reason I joined in the first place. We always say friends first!!
Lead Guitarist Tyler: I actually only knew Matt at first. I have another band called Photons that was in need of a bass player. Photons’ guitarist, Jim, was already friends with Matt, so he invited him to come jam with us. Matt eventually asked me if I could fill in on lead guitar for a few Bogwrought shows, and I fell in love with the music.
4. What is each band member's favorite band?
Bassist Jack: The Black Dahlia Murder.
Vocalist Carrie: It's so hard to pick one favorite, but if I have to, I would say Jinjer, Poppy, and System of a Down
Drummer Tim: Tough question, but I'd have to say either Black Sabbath or Mastodon (RIP Ozzy).
Lead Guitarist Tyler: Type O Negative
Rhythm
Guitarist Matthew: Baroness, Irepress, From Autumn to Ashes
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Drummer TIm: As the primary songwriter, I tend to find inspiration from the bands I grew up listening to and even random stuff from the radio or internet. As all those influences have melded together over the years, I like to think a unique style has emerged.
Vocalist Carrie: Personally, I have always wanted to be a musician and looked up to a lot of musicians as a small child. Now I continue to make music to show to myself and others that disabled people can still make music. Not only that, but we are welcome in the space. A lot of music venues are not accessible, and it makes it so difficult to be a live musician. I hope to continue to make waves in the industry to advocate for better inclusion of the disabled community.
Bassist Jack: Well, I am inspired to write songs due to the fact that we more or less live in a dystopia, and it's one of the few things that makes me feel like I am still a living human.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was at Koto Asian Fusion in Lowell, MA. Our next show is going to be a live radio show on the UMASS Lowell Station on November 20th, 2025.
7. Where would you like to perform in the future?
We would love to play the Middle East, Boston/Sonias, MA, The Strand, RI, Road Runner, MA, and Reggie's in IL.
8. Which artist or band would you like to collaborate with?
We would love to collaborate with some other incredible female-fronted bands like Gravewraith, Aversed, Maidenhead, Fishface, Jinjer, Paramore, and The Pretty Wilds.
9. Is there anyone you wouldn't want to collaborate with?
Collectively everyone in the band answered Ronnie Radke.
10. Have any of you ever experienced stage fright? Do you have any tips for beginners on overcoming it?
Drummer Tim: Yes, but my stage fright is more nerves before a set, either during setup or right before we go on. However, once we start playing, I'm fine.
Vocalist Carrie: I think the biggest advice I can give is practice and trust in yourself, and then exposure. The more you put yourself in front of people, the better. Practice at open mics, with family and friends, and small venues before jumping to a bigger stage/ crowd, and of course, confidence. Always believe in yourself.
Bassist Jack: Stage fright can't be fixed, but the things that help most are confidence and exposure therapy.
11. Which bands have influenced you the most?
Drummer Tim: Black Sabbath, Mastodon, Trivium, Lamb of God
Vocalist Carrie: System of a Down, After the Burial, Miss May I
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Bassist Jack: One time, a fan asked me to put band stickers on her boobs and take pictures with her and her boyfriend while he was holding her on a leash. This was in Arizona.
13. What do you think of your fans?
We love and greatly appreciate everyone who likes our music and supports us. It's hard out there for a small metal group in an arguably oversaturated genre.
