Interviews: The Home Grown
On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Post-Grunge Rock band, The Home Grown, from England. Check out the interview and follow this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it or came out just like that?
The Name came from our fans, but was guided a little by us. When we first started out, we were called “the hairy growlers.” As you can imagine, not many local venues were happy to have that written on their “what’s on” sign, so we decided to change it. Our drummer had just had a drum skin made with THG on it, so we decided to keep to those initials - we put a post out on social media for suggestions of a new name that had the initials THG, and thus The Home Grown was born.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
It’s just what came naturally to us as a group. The songs sort of write themselves and take a form as we play through them, so the genre is pretty much however the song turns out, but as we all have very similar tastes, they tend to lean into our style and type of music.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Yeah, we’re all mates from school. Dave, James, and Rich have been friends since middle school, so since been about 9/10 years old. Alex, we met later when he moved to our school when we were about 15yo.
4. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Nothing in particular, really. I’ll get a hook for a chorus or a riff pop in my head from time to time, and as any good musician, I get the voice recorder app out and make a note of it. Lyrics will come from a personal experience or a story I hear, but it’s never one thing.
5. Where was your last gig?
To watch or last we played?
To watch - We had a band outing to watch Clutch at the O2 in Birmingham at the end of last year. Rich and I went to watch Oasis at Wembley last week.
Last played - We had the privilege of playing some of our wedding music. They approached us at the end of a local show and asked if we’d do it. A gig is a gig ,so we said yeah, haha.
6. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Yeah, I did when I first started singing (we used to have a singer who left the band, and I thought fuck it, I’ll give it a go). The first gig where I sang, I was so nervous. My best advice is to just do it! As scary as it is, 2 songs in, you’ll think Why was I so nervous.. tips to not do.. Get so pissed you can’t perform and make sure you know the tunes inside out back to front.
7. What bands have inspired you the most?
For me, it’s the standard, The Beatles, Nirvana - I love a good catchy chorus.
James: The Beatles & Motorhead
Rich: Foo Fighters & Marilyn Manson
Alexandro: The Offspring & The Black Keys
8. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Can you play my wedding, lol?
9. What do you think of your fans?
Obviously, they are the best, haha, and have the best taste.
