Track By Tracks: Meteora - Broken Mind (2025)

1. Broken Mind:

We think this is one of the strongest entries on the album. The instrumental parts are heavy, the chorus is almost pop-like and catchy, and it showcases well what Meteora has to offer. Aside from not having the clean male vocals, of course. Its project name was ’ Sonata Borgir’ up until I wrote the lyrics. The very first thing that was written for it was the guitar riff of the intro, and somehow, when it was the only instrument, it had a ’Wolf and Raven’ from Sonata Arctica vibe for me. Then, after the instrumentation of this segment and writing other parts of the song, Gábor gave this working title to it because it got closer to the sound of Dimmu Borgir than Sonata Arctica. I wrote the instrumental for the chorus theme totally separately.

The lyrics are about someone who knows they are deeply flawed, but wants to be a better person for the one they love. Past traumas must be acknowledged, but they can’t justify bad behavior towards anyone, especially your mate.

2. Morningstar:

The first part I had when I started writing Morningstar was the strings of the chorus. It was somewhere in the middle of the songwriting process of the album, and I had written some of the really dark-toned songs before this one, so I felt something more uplifting would be nice.

I wrote the lyrics about my grandfather, who passed away a few years ago. He was really kind, wise, and I felt he always had the best intentions for everybody. He is a role model for me of what kind of man I want to be.

3. Elysion:

I love Kamelot and their dark power metal vibe, and I always wanted to try and do something similar, even if only for one song. It was not meant to have me as a lead in the beginning; it’s just that when the instrumental parts were finished, we felt a male voice would fit better here than a female one. It was a big gamble; we haven’t done this before, and we can only hope that our fans will like this little change here.

As a little background for the lyrics, it has been known since my childhood that I would need heart surgery sooner or later. The time came this June, and preparations began about a year before that. It was said to be a routine surgery, nothing to worry about, but if they tell you there will be a cut in your heart, you may feel a little skeptical. Elysion is about a dying man trying to comfort his loved one that death is not the end, and one day they will be together again.

4. In My Name:

It is always fun writing music with a gothic feel. I’m a big fan of Sirenia’s early work. At Sixes and Sevens is a flawless album in my opinion, and it left a great impression on me. This is one of my favorite tracks to play from our new material, portraying the devil; you can just really let loose for a few minutes. And also I think this song is the best example from our catalog of what having three vocalists with really distinct vocal character is good for.

In the lyrics, there are two perspectives, so to speak, a spiritual and a grounded one, but both have the same message. Politicians often say they speak in the name of everyone in their country, and some religious individuals also like to justify their actions, however awful they are, by saying they did it in the name of God. God must be pissed because of this, and so am I. In the song, we assume the roles of God, Lucifer, a politician, a religious zealot, and the everyday man who is suffering because of all of this.
