Behind The Tracks: King Of Cups - Naughty List All Year (Single) (2025)
Every few years, King of Cups, which is Bryan Underwood (BryGuy) and Shaun Zizi (Sugar Shaun), put out a Christmas song because the season always gives us something to react to. Ours are never the warm, candle-lit, cocoa-by-the-fire kind. We leave that to the professionals. Our Christmas songs live in the uncomfortable, slightly awkward corners of the holidays, the pressure to spend money you don’t want to spend, the obligation to show up for people you barely know, and the expectation that everyone should feel joyful on command. If nothing else, December is very good at pretending everything is fine, and we have always found it more honest (and more fun) to poke at that illusion instead.
That is where the humor comes in. Our holiday songs are built on sarcasm, exaggeration, and the kind of laughs that come from recognition rather than cheer. They are meant to make you smirk at the chaos, not cry into a stocking. We joke about the stress because laughing at it feels better than pretending it does not exist.
“Naughty List All Year” grew directly out of that tension. Christmas loves a simple scoreboard: Naughty or nice. Real life is messier than that. Most people live somewhere in the middle, doing their best, messing up, and quietly carrying things they would rather not explain over dinner. The song takes that overly neat holiday logic and flips it on its head, rejecting the idea that you have to earn approval or behave perfectly just because the calendar says so.
By the end of the song, it circles back to something hopeful without suddenly turning into a Hallmark movie. You do not have to change yourself to belong. You do not have to sand down your rough edges to deserve joy. If you have ever felt out of place during the holidays, this song is for you. Being on the naughty list all year does not mean you failed. Sometimes it just means you stayed honest and maybe laughed a little while doing it.
