We have a band member going through a rough custody battle over their child resulted in a lot of built up emotions, and when working with our producer Richard Wicander were introduced to Elijah Barnett of Cane Hill, who provided the core of the song itself. We felt this matched the intensity we were looking for and after collaborating with Elijah and Richard we made the song our own, and based the lyrics around the ups and downs of a long drawn out fight over a passion, love, or belief that anyone can hold dear or relate to. The song was originally titled This Is War but decided the more subtle approach of "Waves" fit the theme of back and forth turmoil more accordingly.
