Interviews About Albums: Mount Palatine - Wormholy World (2025)
In this new interview, we sat down with the Finland Psychedelic Heavy Metal band, Mount Palatine, to ask questions about their album "Wormholy World".
1. What can you say about Wormholy World?
Wormholy World is our second album as a group. We are pretty happy with the outcome, because we feel that our capabilities as musicians have evolved quite a bit since we started playing together in 2020, and we think this album really conveys the journey. Compared with the first album, Cockroach Crusade (released under our previous band name, The Paladin), Wormholy World is a more expansive work and more cohesive in songwriting, ensemble playing, instrumentation, and overall sound. While everything always leaves room for further development, we think we succeeded in capturing our vision of what kind of music we want to do, and have set a clear direction for subsequent albums.
2. What is the meaning of the album name?
Coming up with the name was difficult at first, but we realized that the atmosphere of the album, along with the lyrics, revolves around universal and timeless themes about life and the world in general, in all of their strangeness, beauty, and twistedness. With that in mind, with Wormholy World, the pieces sort of fell into their places in their own strange way, capturing the whole thing better than the other options.
3. Which one is the composer of Wormholy World?
We credit the composing of our songs to the whole band. Song structures are composed through jamming and then piecing different sections and parts together into songs. Lyrics are then written by one of us per song. Ideas are discussed and we operate more or less democratically. The final composing and arrangements take place by playing the songs over and over, and recording demos in between, to help shape the songs.
4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?
The Sands is the song that first started the work on the new album, and is also the opening track. Compared to our debut, The Sands features experimentation with a somewhat more psychedelic feel and atmospheric nuances, which was the direction we wanted to go with this new record, with the rest of the other songs too.
5. Is there a special message in Wormholy World? If there is what it is?
If there’s a special secret message inside, the listeners need to figure it out by themselves ;) Jokes aside, rather than containing any clear message, Wormholy World is an arena for our ponderings on life, cosmos, and everything. So please just enjoy the ride and hopefully be inspired by these abstract utterances of ours. We believe the topics are so universal that people can rather intuitively relate to them, while our expression leaves room for interpretation, and thus the message can be different from one listener to another.
6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?
The lyrics of our album help to weave the stories and paint images with careful strokes. Savoring those lines should leave you in contemplation, lost in thought. Here is the last verse of the album opener The Sands:
“Souls transcend the rivers of sand
A handful of dust slipping through the fingers of time
Caravan shadows are drawn against the sky
And their guides are the stars at night”
7. Which inspirations have been important for Wormholy World? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?
Difficult, if not impossible, to point out exact things. Life experiences and zeitgeist. Musical backgrounds of each of us. All of us in the band have had our share of turmoil and beautiful things in our lives during the recent years, so maybe the inspiration is the journey of coming to terms with all of that. We would also like to thank our observant friend Frog, for whom we hope all the best in the future frog endeavours.
8. Something to add?
We have our first music video out for our song Newborn Sun - go check that one out! The music video embraces the themes of the whole album, and presents pondering vistas over awe of the world, and a variety of expressions of sacredness that can arise from the natural beauty of our world.
