Interviews: Attic Theory

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Groove Rock band, Attic Theory, from England. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it just come out like that?

The band name came from a fascinating moment in an episode of the TV series ‘Elementary’. In that particular episode, the character Sherlock Holmes draws an insightful parallel between the workings of the human brain and an attic where various facts and memories are stored. This metaphor captures the essence of how we think and create music, and we felt it was a fitting representation of our artistic identity.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

We naturally gravitate toward this genre because it reflects the music that flows from us as a cohesive unit. Our collective influences and personal styles make it feel like an authentic expression of who we are as musicians.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

I had known Tim through various musical endeavors prior to Attic Theory. Matt is my brother-in-law. By the time Norm and Michael joined the group, the foundation of Attic Theory was already laid, which made our collaboration feel seamless and organic.

4. Each band member's favourite band?

For me, Lew, I’d have to say Candlebox. They are the most underrated band in the universe. For Tim, his all-time favourite is Alice in Chains. For Matt, there’s a tough choice between Alter Bridge and Metallica, as both bands have had a profound impact on his musical development and preferences. For Mike, it’s the Cure. All the best bands have a goth on the bass. And lastly, for the best member of the band, Norm. His favourite band is 5ive. He's an especially happy person this Christmas, now that J is back in the band.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

When it comes to crafting lyrics, my inspiration often stems from personal experiences and reflections on past events. I find myself contemplating what choices I could have made differently, which adds a layer of introspection and depth to the songwriting process. As for the music, Tim is a human jukebox and comes up with a million riffs a day. He’s happy to sell the ones we don’t use for £1 a riff.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our most recent gig took place at Planet Rockstock, and it was an absolutely incredible experience! The energy in the venue and the enthusiasm of the crowd made it truly awesome.

7. Where would you like to play?

We dream of performing at prestigious festivals such as Download, Bloodstock, Steelhouse, and Stonedead. We would like to tour Europe again, but Brexit has made that quite difficult… but that’s not going to stop us.

8. Who would you like to support?

It would be a dream come true to share the stage with iconic bands like Alice In Chains, The Cure, Life of Agony, and Candlebox again. Additionally, supporting Pearl Jam would be an unforgettable experience for all of us.

9. Who not?

That’s a challenging question! We are generally open to supporting any artist, as long as there’s a green room for us to prepare in. We’re just thrilled at the prospect of playing alongside other musicians and gaining new fans!

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Yes, we’ve all experienced moments of stage fright, particularly before stepping onto the stage to a huge crowd. Personally, I find that practicing breathing exercises helps me warm up and focus, which allows me to center myself and alleviate any pre-show nerves. We all have moments to ourselves, then a team huddle, then it’s go time!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Our influences span a diverse range of iconic bands. We draw energy from Candlebox, Metallica, Alter Bridge, Alice In Chains, Sevendust, Life of Agony, and Pearl Jam. Mike has a deep admiration for Thin Lizzy, particularly inspired by Phil Lynott’s stage presence. He also looks up to heavyweights like Black Sabbath, Devin Townsend, and Dream Theater. Tim finds a great source of inspiration in Jerry Cantrell - though he’s not quite at the point of emulating him completely just yet! Personally, I’ve always been influenced by the late, great Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots; he will forever hold the title of ‘melody master’ in my book. Norm is so passionate about drumming that he spends countless hours watching YouTube videos of his favorite drummers; he might as well have shares in Vaseline! As for Matt, he’s a huge fan of legends like Slash, Van Halen, and Iron Maiden.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

So far, we haven’t encountered anything too bizarre, although we have had requests for autographs without a pen! Receiving a Welsh flag from a fan was a unique and memorable experience. Nice to take something home to remember the show.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We consider our fans to be absolutely phenomenal. The level of support and enthusiasm we receive is truly remarkable, and it inspires us to continue creating and sharing our music.

14. What do you think of our site?

I think it’s fantastic! I had the chance to explore it, and I found it to be very user-friendly and easy to navigate.

15. Something to add?

We’re genuinely excited about the release of our new album and can’t wait for everyone to hear it. We believe it’s going to showcase our growth as artists, and the fans are going to love it!
