Interviews: Quaint
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Indie Rock band, Quaint, from Scotland. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or come out just like that?
Our lead guitarist, Lewis Fenton, came up with the name after none of us could decide on anything better after a long couple of days trying to come up with something.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We’ve always taken after music that’s inspired us, as that’s sort of how we started out and formed the band. It’s changed a lot over the years, but we’re now shifting in a new direction, into something a bit darker.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Leo, Lewis and Fenton had known each other throughout school and been friends for years as they all stayed in or around Riddrie in Glasgow. Kyle knew Lewis through a friend and heard he was looking for a guitarist/singer, and that was it, really.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
Lewis’ favourite band has always been Arctic Monkeys, Leo’s is either Pink Floyd/Viagra Boys, Fentons was always Nirvana, and Kyle’s is The Smiths/Wunderhorse.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
The thing with songwriting for me (Kyle) is that I never really sit down and aim to write a song, it’ll come out of a set of chords or a sound I like and something will just click and usually it can take a while for melodies or lyrics to come and it’ll just have to be in a moment otherwise they can be egregious if they’re forced or I slave over them.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was at Whistlebinkies in Edinburgh.
7. Where would you like to act?
There are a few really good venues here in Scotland we’d love to play, but I think the big one is always the Barrowlands, especially since it's in the heart of the East End and such a great venue.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
There are a few interesting bands out there which we’d love to play with Viagra Boys, Keo, Bleech 9:3, Faeda and lots of others.
9. Whorm not?
There are definitely hundreds of bands we’re probably not so fond of, but it's probably not right to name them, so we’ll probably keep that one under wraps.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
We all struggled with it at first; however, I think that's completely normal for everyone. The main thing is to have confidence in your tunes even if you’re not so proficient as a performer, because if you’ve got great songs, they’ll get you anywhere. Just focus on the playing onstage rather than obsessing over the actual performance, and it’ll start to fall into place the more you work at it.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
As a collective, the bands that have had the biggest impact on our musical output would have to be Oasis, Pink Floyd, Fontaines D.C, AM and Wunderhorse.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
The weirdest thing a fan has ever asked us for would probably be another band's autograph, which happened to us at HMV in Glasgow last year, which we got a good laugh out of in the end.
13. What do you think of your fans?
Our fans have been great. It's a class being able to perform in the Glasgow scene, where there are so many venues and people interested in music. We get messages on social media from people all over the world telling us they love our tunes and to stick at it, which is always inspiring for us and even at our Norwich show earlier this year, the songs went down well, and we have people dancing and singing, which is exactly what we want.
14. What do you think of our site?
We think it's great that it gives emerging artists an opportunity to speak about their music and journey as a group, and builds a community for underground artists. We can only hope many others follow suit.
15. Something to add?
Our brand new single ‘Secrets’ is out on all platforms now and we’ll be performing at Twa Tams in Perth on Dec 6th.
