Behind The Tracks: Wasting Time - Ripped Blue Jeans (Single) (2025)
Ripped Blue Jeans came together during a transitional moment, both personally and creatively. The song is rooted in a relationship that grew naturally over time someone I’d known for a while through work at GoodLife. What started casually turned into something more, but as life moved forward and touring took me away, we slowly drifted apart. It wasn’t dramatic or explosive, more like outgrowing your favourite pair of jeans. They still matter, they still hold memories, but they don’t quite fit the same way anymore.
We’re still staying in touch to this day.
Musically, the foundations of the song were written in fragments while I was on the road, guitar parts and ideas pieced together between shows and travel days. At the time, I didn’t have a clear subject matter in mind, just a feeling that I was listening to Green Day's Insomniac a lot at the time. Once that chapter of my life came to a close, everything clicked. The lyrics came quickly, which doesn’t always happen for me. Sometimes I can struggle to articulate exactly what I want to say, but this song felt like it wrote itself.
I took the song to Matt Gauthier’s studio to really flesh it out. Matt is an incredible songwriter in his own right, and at the time, he had just returned from recording and working with Jason Livermore at the legendary Blasting Room. He brought back a fresh perspective, along with new techniques and tricks that helped push the song further than it would have gone otherwise. The process was completely collaborative; we weren’t precious about ideas, we tried different approaches, and put everything to tape before deciding what truly served the song.
From there, I brought the track to the rest of the band, and each member added their own character and energy, elevating it beyond what it started as. Ripped Blue Jeans feels like a defining moment for us. Personally, I think it’s the strongest material we’ve released to date, and a clear reflection of where we are right now as a band.
