Behind The Tracks: The Darts - Apocalypse (Single) (2026)
A little while back while on tour in France, we got to see the famous medieval apocalypse tapestry in Angers, France. The tapestry is huge - it spans all four walls of a room in a castle. The tapestry, woven by women way back then, colorfully and graphically depicts two narratives, the gods on top and the humans on the bottom. There is a lot of destruction of people and royalty and gods celebrating and, well, it's pretty profound and insightful especially in light of the discontent broiling in the USA of late. I guess the dissatisfaction with kings and their ilk has not changed in some ways. As I left the castle, the lyrics "no future, no kings" came to me and I wrote this song in the van that same day. The song practically wrote itself. It was still sitting on my laptop as just a demo when the No Kings marches started in the USA a year or so later. So we quickly added the song to our set and it was a huge success. People came to merch asking where they could buy the song. We recorded it with Mark Rains at Station House Studio in August, 2025, and the tones he got for the guitars and vocals are just ideal for what I had in mind. The speaker-shredding opening riff is exactly how I wanted the heavier second half of the record to be announced. It was really exciting that Gretsch Guitars immediately used an instrumental version for an ad, and even featured Becca and Lindsay playing in it. Although it is protest song of sorts, it is also a blaring, noisy, riff-y celebration of burning it all down and starting over, like I think the tapestry images intended to portray in addition to being a kind of cautionary tale. At least that's my interpretation, and while I hate to see anything burn down, if it's really truly the inescapable end of something, we might as well sing together while it's falling. With a killer fuzz guitar riff.
