Interviews: Kill The Silence

On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Post-Hardcore band Kill The Silence from England. Check out the interview and follow this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it just come out like that?

The band name comes from Doctor Who! There are enemies in the Matt Smith era called ‘The Silence’ who work in the shadows in all corners of society; they subliminally influence major political decisions, but you can only remember them whilst you're seeing them. The Doctor managed to record one of them saying ‘you should kill us all on sight’ and broadcast it to the world, hence we should all ‘Kill The Silence’.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

When we started the band, we were into bands like Lower Than Atlantis, Deaf Havana, Mallory Knox, We Are The Ocean, etc. Our earlier stuff was in that vein, and I think we still have a little bit of that flavour sprinkled in there. Over time, our tastes have veered more on the heavier side, so our music has kind of reflected this!

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

This lineup came together over the course of the band, we found each other in different circumstances, Jason & Sam knew each other from college for about a year before they originally created the band, Ian joined in from Jason’s university after we were looking for a bassist, after a few years we then needed a drummer and Ian knew John already from the same university and then a couple of years later, we decided that we would look for a rhythm guitarist to take guitar duties from Jason so he could focus on singing, Jason already knew Dan from back in the university days so it all clicked in!

4. Each band member's favourite band?

Jason: Most recently, I’d say I’ve been listening to a lot of Dayseeker, over the past few years its been Sleep Token. The last band I actually called my ‘favourite’ band was Lower Than Atlantis, back when they released their first 3 albums. Finally, before that, the band that got me into rock music and my first ever ‘Favourite’ band was actually ‘The Subways’! The first cover I ever performed with other musicians was ‘Rock & Roll Queen’.

Dan: Periphery, I was first introduced to them through a roommate at university, and I’ve been obsessed ever since. There's so much to each track that every time I listen, I find a new element to it. Before then, I had a few favourites: Killswitch Engage, Atreyu. Bullet for My Valentine and most of all Avenged Sevenfold. These were bands that, when I saw them live, I was blown away. John: Rush, ever since I started drumming at age 10, Neil Peart has always been my favourite drummer. Some honourable mentions would be ‘Dave Matthews Band, ‘The Pineapple Thief and ‘Night Verses. All have excellent drummers. It's what I appreciate the most when I listen to their music.

Sam: Every Time I Die, I’d been listening to them since around 2007, but really got into them when they dropped ‘Low Teens’ in 2026. They’re one of the rare bands that I can just slap an album on and vibe all the way through. Before then, my first favourite band was Slipknot; they were my main gateway into heavy music along with Korn and early BMTH.

Ian: Vola. I discovered them about 10 years ago when I stumbled across their debut album “Inmazes” and have been following them ever since. The fact they're a solid prog group is one thing, but there are very few bands out there who can write and produce songs in tunings as low as F# and G without their guitars sounding like mud.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Sam: To be honest, most of the bands I listened to growing up. Even to this day, if I hear a song I like, I think to myself, "gosh I wish I could write like that". Writing original music and maybe one day reaching the level I hear other musicians at is a big passion of mine. It's a creative outlet, and I take songwriting as a chance to see how far I can push myself and learn along the way. Recently, I've become increasingly inspired by some solo guitar artists like Clayton King, David Maxim Micic and even more extreme metal guitarists Charles Caswell from Berried Alive with his wife Kayley on Bass.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last show was actually at the same venue as our next show is at! We supported TSS at The Key Club in Leeds on October 5th. Our next show is back at The Key Club, but we’re headlining for the launch of our EP: Resolve on 18th April!

7. Where would you like to play?

Jason: We’d actually love to play outside of the UK, so joining an EU tour is a huge bucket list item for us. UK venues-wise, I have always wanted to perform at the O2 Academy in Leeds. I’ve seen so many of the bands that inspired me there when I started out; it would be an incredible experience to stand on that stage!

8. Who would you like to support?

I think I speak for us all when we would be most excited about supporting our individual favourite bands over a huge band like Metallica and Rammstein etc… We’d absolutely snatch that opportunity if it came of course, playing to a crowd that size and in venues that size is something only a small percentage of musicians will ever experience, and we’d have to be incredibly lucky to land something like that. Realistically, I would love to support bands like Alexisonfire, Architects, and Bad Omens - Still huge, of course, but personally much more of an inspiration to our music.

9. Who not?

Mariah Carey, as great as her music is, I just don't think we’d be the right fit. I know she’ll be gutted to hear that, but unfortunately had to be said (Sorry)

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Honestly, practice makes perfect. Just throw yourself into it, and the more you put yourself out there, the easier it gets! Also, the minute you get into the song, all of those nerves just wash away and get replaced by joy and adrenaline!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

As a band, we all come from slightly different musical worlds, and that’s a big part of what makes Kill The Silence what it is. Rather than chasing one specific sound, everyone brings their own influences to the table, and that blend is where our identity really comes from.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

We’ve been lucky not to get anything too strange yet, but being asked for photos or autographs is still something we never take for granted. It might seem small, but it means a lot to us and always leaves us smiling.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We appreciate them more than we can really put into words. We don’t have a massive fanbase, but the people who support us are incredibly loyal, and honestly, we wouldn’t have lasted half as long without them.

14. What do you think of our site?

We love it. Breathing The Core does an amazing job of supporting heavy music and underground bands. Platforms like this are so important for keeping the scene alive. We really appreciate the time and effort you put into what you do.

15. Something to add?

Thank you for having us! It's been an absolute pleasure! We’ve been Kill The Silence, and we hope to see you all at our EP launch in Leeds on 18th April
