Interviews: Whisky Sugar
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock 'N' Roll band Whisky Sugar from Spain. Check out the interview and follow the band on their INSTAGRAM PROFILE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it come out just like that?
Hey, Breathing The Core crew, thanks for having our band on.
John Side (guitar) and Rai Storm (bass/voc) were hanging in our practice space with one of
our previous drummers sometime in 2020-1, and each came up with a word. One blurted
“Sugar”, another “Whisky”, and another “Folks”. So it was “Whisky Sugar Folks” for a time.
By the time our own song brother and final drummer, Vic Fury, had joined, we’d dropped the
Folks (our accent made it sound too much like “F***s”!).
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Rai: Rock and Punk changed my life. I stopped playing football and picked up a bass to make
a band with my cousin and a couple of friends in school. It led me down a new path
John Side: Because one of the first things i listen in my life was Rock and Roll and stays with
me until today, i love it from the first time.
Vic: Since I was a child I have always been attracted to Rock & Roll and Blues.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Rai: John and I met when we made an independent film in 2014. We spoke about music for a
long time before we stitched our band together
Vic: I met them through the internet when they were looking for a drummer.
4. Each band member favourite band?
Santi: Right now, I’m listening to a lot of Fleet Foxes; there’s real weight to so many of their
early songs
John Side: Little Richard, Van Halen, Soda Stereo, The Police and the list goes on …
Vic: Undoubtedly Queen
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Santi: history, languages, the techno-maddening world we’re living in. Maybe movies shot in
the desert? Anyone seen Sirat? That was stunning
John Side: Sometimes it's the way I see and feel things in life, with a little pinches of
science fiction, news, philosophy, drama, comedy, movies, rock and roll … like Bob Fosse says
: “Life its a cabaret”
Vic: Moments in life that you want to remain in your memory.
6. Where was your last gig?
Last gig was October, our singer Rai Storm had an ear surgery that left him KO’d for
December until January. We’re setting off for new venues and places to play this year, know
anyone interested in a rock’n’roll trio playing original songs and also covering legendary
ones? Drop us a line
7. Where would you like to perform?
Santi: Paramount Theatre in Seattle
John Side: In every place our fans wants to hear us. And of course in Hyde Park.
Vic: Wembley Stadium.
8. Whom would you like to perform with?
Santi: If The Strokes want us as an opening act, I’m down
John Side: If it's possible with hard rockers from the 80’s and 70’s.
Vic: I would love to share the statge with AC/DC.
9. Whom not?
**The band sighs**
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Do you have any tips for beginners on how to
beat that?
Santi: Wouldn’t say it’s fright, I can get up there. I just want people to have a good time. My
tips if you’re singing: warm up your throat (whisky not beer)
John Side: its a feeling you get when monsters come…..
Vic: Yes, I do feel a bit intimidated playing in front of a large audience. There are always
nerves beforehand. I focus on listening to the music and having fun with my bandmates.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Santi: Rolling Stones are way up high. Also a local Spanish band I love, The Hinds, those girls
rock
John Side: I love a lot of bands, Van Halen its one of these bands, they blow up the house in
terms of rock and roll energy and feeling.
Vic: Queen, AC/DC, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin...
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
John Side: One guy says to me after a gig that i need to take out the first string of my guitar
because i play always at high notes and i say: man that’s what rock and roll its about, high
notes and high hopes.
Vic: A girl asked me for a selfie with her two friends while we were playing alive. She got the
photo and a drumstick as a gift.
13. What do you think of your fans?
Santi: Love ‘em, thank you for listening and keep rolling with us.
John Side: Thanks for the support and Keep Rockin’
Vic: Whithout them there is no show or Rock & Roll.
14. What do you think of our site?
Love it! Really like the Compilation section it’s awesome having a playlist to listen to while we
read interviews and reviews on the site. Keep it up!
15. Something to add? Can you tell us about your latest single ‘Tannen’s World’?
Tannen’s World is a sort of immediate reaction to how world events unfolded in 2025. We’ve
entered what feels like a new and unnerving era in which the political spectrum is being led
via social media announcements, celebrity despots are in vogue, and our sense of resistance is
faltering more than ever.
One night of band practice we were in a particularly grimy mood. The band churned out a
simple grunge-garage tune with words inspired by Back To The Future 2. Basically, like
Marty and Doc, we’re entering a world we no longer recognize. Also, the band just wanted to
make something down and dirty that felt a little raw.
