Track By Tracks: The Machinist - Towers (2026)
1. Sagittarius In Bloom:
Sagittarius A* is the black hole in the Center of the Milky Way, and is responsible for providing the gravity that has governed the motions of most of what we can visibly see in our night sky.
Thematically, this plays right in with a staple of ours that we are what we are against the backdrop of cosmic giants that have allowed us to coexist despite themselves, rather than because of them.
On another level, reading these lyrics with the power of hindsight, I suppose there’s also a kind of helplessness that comes with this sensation that we exist in the foothills of giant entities that don’t know or care we exist. Just turn on the TV to see some billionaire’s immensely burnable face gurning at you, and yet some people pretend they have an ounce of relatability with the monster.
On yer bike with ya.
2. Of Creation And Cancer:
The human genome is incredibly fragile. Despite what a lot of us think or what our arrogance leads us to believe. Given a long enough life span, cancer in every living person isn't just likely. It's inevitable. If we all lived to be 200 years old? Our likelihood of developing cancer is 100%. If you managed to avoid getting a cancer in your lifespan, it's because you went and died before you could.
Now expand that out to the effect the human race is having on its environment, and how all civilisations ultimately destroy themselves and will eventually eat their young. It's inevitable. And when we are gone, there will probably be a collective sigh of relief from everything that's left.
3. Cellular Catharsis:
Imagine hating something so much that it burns in you at a cellular level. Imagine that hatred controls you to the point that it becomes the thing that defines you and is now the only thing you know.
You can't even remember why you hate. You just know that you do.
If you place a loudspeaker in a large enough space with enough echoes, by the time you get to the third or fourth echo, it's degenerated to sine waves and doesn't resemble what you started with at all.
You are alive. You hate. You are anhedonic. And eventually everything will explode, and the only tangible way that explosion will manifest is violence, either towards the self or towards your perceived enemy, who you can’t really remember why you had beef with anyway. But |I’m sure you can make up a lot of inane nonsense on the spot if asked.
