Behind The Scenes: Tubefreeks - Flower (Official Video)

We had some friends of ours who had worked with director Tom Flynn. Tom is amazing. He is like the nicest guy you ever want to meet. He puts you in a relaxed mood where you feel like you've known him for so long. He knows what he's doing so well. We're not videographers, so it's great when you have someone who says, “OK, here's what we're going to do”.

For “Flower”, the parts where we're playing the music were done inside with a cyclorama wall. It's those big white walls, almost like a green screen but white. He keeps the top part of your body so the background really looks like you're in it. One of the neat things he does is he's really good on a Segway. When he's filming and the music's pumping, he rides around, coming in, going out, left, and right. It gives the camera shots a different perspective.

I really have to credit Tom for making it so cool, but he’s also really good at seeing something on the spot. There’s a part with a dead tree. I was like, “I’ll move it out of the way”, and he said, “No, we can use this”. He’s really good at planning, but also improvising. It’s that combination that led to a great result.

I would say that the meaning of the video developed as it was being created. We didn't initially plan that the actress would disappear and the flower would be there. It gave this paradoxical feeling where you thought you saw something, but it was something else. Maybe that lets you down a little, but it's still very interesting and beautiful and thought-provoking. She disappeared, and then there was a flower, so where was the symbolism in that? That’s something people along the way helped shape.

For me, filming the music video absolutely has changed how I think about the song. Once the video has been created, you have a past in your brain. You'll be singing the song, and suddenly you'll flash to that moment in the video, and you're acting out what you saw. It changes the way you approach things. The visual becomes what I should do or feel in that part when performing.
