Interviews: Daysick
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock band Daysick from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name - did you plan it or did it come naturally?
The band originally formed during COVID with just Mikey (drums) and me. We spent about four months throwing around random band names - objects, actions, things we saw in public, just a bunch of chaotic ideas.
One day, Mikey came across the word “Daysick” on Urban Dictionary. It meant calling in sick for the day but feeling good enough to go out and enjoy your night. It clicked instantly. The name just stuck.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
This has been my favourite kind of music for as long as I can remember. I grew up on it.
When I was a kid, I used to make my parents sit in my room and watch me perform full Billy Talent concerts. So for me, this genre was never really a choice - it was always what I wanted to do.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Mikey and I actually met through a Kijiji ad. I wanted to put an album together, but didn’t have anyone to work with, and he was looking to start a project. We got started during lockdown, so for a while it was just the two of us writing and building everything from scratch.
Alex joined about two years later, after he and Mikey met at a Magic: The Gathering night. Mikey came back and said, “We have to bring this guy in - he’s unreal.” That turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve made.
Mike (bass) and I knew each other from playing rugby (and partying - rugby players party a LOT). After he moved closer, we started jamming casually, and eventually it clicked that he should be the band’s bassist. The rest is history.
4. Each band member’s favourite band?
We’ll follow up with the full band answers, but for me, it’s My Chemical Romance and Billy Talent.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
I’ve always been drawn to storytelling. I like expressing emotions without saying everything outright - instead, telling a story that makes people feel what I’m trying to convey.
I’ve always loved concept albums and strong visual storytelling, so I try to write songs that feel like part of a bigger picture. Ideally, the meaning can shift depending on what the listener needs from it.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was actually at an outdoor haunted maze in November. We were there shooting a music video, and the owner asked if we’d play at his kid’s birthday party. We thought it was hilarious and said, “hell yeah.”
The only thing we didn’t think through was that November in Canada is not exactly ideal for an outdoor show. I think Mikey is still shivering.
7. Where would you like to perform?
We’d love to get over to Europe. The love for rock music over there is unreal.
8. Who would you like to feature with?
Maybe not even a feature - just being on the same bill as bands like My Chemical Romance, Sum 41, Billy Talent, Rise Against, Pierce the Veil, or Bring Me The Horizon would be unreal. That’s the kind of lineup we grew up on.
9. Who would you NOT want to feature with?
Honestly, I don’t think we’re at a point where we can be too picky. Beggars can’t be choosers.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners?
I still get a bit nervous before shows, and honestly, it’s worse when there are more people there that I know. If it’s all strangers, the nerves are almost gone.
My biggest advice is just go up there and have fun. Don’t take yourself too seriously. If you mess up, no one is really going to notice or remember it. You’ve got to be able to laugh at yourself and enjoy the moment.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
My Chemical Romance and Billy Talent are definitely the biggest two.
MCR for their storytelling and ability to blend genres, and Billy Talent for their tone, energy, and unique song structures.
12. What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
We’re not quite at the level where fans are doing anything too crazy yet. Honestly, the weirdest thing is still people I don’t know asking for pictures after shows.
You could run into me studying at the library or serving you a drink at a bar, so when someone asks for a photo, it still feels surreal.
13. What do you think of your fans?
Every band says it, but our fans really have been incredible. The support we’ve been getting feels very genuine.
Having people tell you that something you created actually meant something to them is a pretty indescribable feeling.
14. What do you think of our site?
We’ve been familiar with Breathing The Core for a while, and it’s great to see platforms that consistently support emerging bands and give artists a space to tell their story. That kind of exposure really matters, especially in rock right now.
15. Something to add?
We’ve got a new rock opera coming next year, with singles starting to drop next month.
It’s going to be a full journey - heavier, more emotional, and more dynamic than anything we’ve done before. Definitely buckle in.
