Behind The Tracks: King of Cups - Keeper Of The Flame (Single) (2026)
King of Cups dives deep into transformation and empathy on their latest single, “Keeper of the Flame.” The Alt-Rock project, made up of Shaun Zizi (Sugar Shaun) and Bryan Underwood (BryGuy), continues building toward their upcoming Elemental album, a release centered around the classical elements. As the sixth single from the project, “Keeper of the Flame” represents spirit, both in theme and emotional intensity.
Driven by passionate vocals, crushing guitar riffs, and a rhythm section built to hit hard, “Keeper of the Flame” delivers a powerful listening experience that balances heaviness with emotional vulnerability. Beneath the massive sound is a deeply personal story rooted in vocalist Shaun’s own transformative medicine experience.
During the experience, Shaun endured overwhelming overstimulation, intense purging, psychosis-like symptoms, and emotional vulnerability. Working professionally in the therapy field with people experiencing psychosis, Shaun suddenly found himself in the position of the people he normally helps. The overstimulation mirrored what someone with autism or severe mental distress might experience daily. Simple things became unbearable, and finding comfort felt impossible.
Shaun had to stop being the helper and allow himself to be helped by the facilitators guiding the ceremony. That realization became one of the central emotional breakthroughs behind “Keeper of the Flame.” Instead of resisting support, he learned the importance of surrender, trust, and allowing others to care for him when he could not fully care for himself.
The experience permanently shifted his perspective on empathy and human suffering. Shaun realized his experience would eventually end when the medicine wore off, while many people living with severe mental illness or neurological overstimulation endure those struggles every day of their lives. That understanding deepened his compassion both personally and professionally, while inspiring him to break down emotional walls and live more openly from a place of authenticity and empathy.
The song also draws inspiration from Initiates of the Flame by Manly P. Hall. Through that lens, “Keeper of the Flame” explores the idea that every person is an initiate of spirit in their own way. The track suggests that serving humanity through compassion, understanding, and empathy can also become a form of serving the divine.
At its core, “Keeper of the Flame” is about human connection. It is about understanding people during their darkest moments, accepting help when needed, and carrying compassion for those who cannot always help themselves.
