Interviews About Albums: Aetere - Theogonie (2026)
In this new interview, we sat down with the French Doom Metal band Aetere to ask questions about their album, "Theogonie".
1. What can you say about "Theogonie"?
A: Theogonie is the first album that we wrote between 2017 and 2019 while living in Bordeaux.
J: This album turns out to be the first release of our collaboration, which started a while back when we were both living in Bordeaux (France). We are really happy to present it today.
2. What is the meaning of "Theogonie" name?
A: Theogonie is what we call the birth of a God in the ancient Greek world and its subsequent state of ruler over the cosmogony. In Aetere's Theogonie, we discuss the birth of the inner God, how men are in fact divines.
3. Which one is the composer of "Theogonie"?
A: Both of us are, Johan plays all synths, machines and bass, and I do vocals, guitars and bass. I wrote the lyrics, but we both came up with the songs' titles and the album's name.
J: Yes, we locked ourselves in our rehearsal room & started to jam together around bass and synth lines.
Everything went really naturally.
4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?
A: I would pick "Galea", because it's easier to understand and because I love the bridge.
J: Let's say "TƩnƩbrisme", as I really enjoy the final synth line!
5. Is there a special message in "Theogonie"? If there is what it is?
A: There's not a message in itself, but it's more of a story, one that speaks about the fragility of material life and the research of the inner flame, how you "can see a world in a grain of sand" and how mankind is divine in itself.
6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?
A: Thanatos says:
" ..He’s alive in mirror’s eyes
He’s alone
In front of my eyes
This God is
An axe in the sky
This God is
A war in mind "
This song speaks about a man that discovered being in fact, his own God.
7. Which inspirations have been important for "Theogonie"? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?
A: At the time we wrote Theogonie, I recall being inspired by Johan's band Year of No Light, with their melodic and heavy riffs. We rehearsed in the same space, and it was as if everything was connected. I wrote the lyrics of Galea for my best friend. We live far away from each other, and it's a song that speaks about our friendship.
J: Mostly the ambiance in Bordeaux. It felt like the end of an area. The place we were rehearsing was going to be evicted due to city renewal, and lots of cool places were closing.
I remember listening a lot to Joy Division at that time.
8. Something to add?
J: Thanks a lot for your support!
