Interviews: Damned To Downfall

With a sound that refuses to sit still and a vision rooted in both intensity and evolution, Damned To Downfall return with their latest single, “I Need Out.” Blending the raw aggression of extreme metal with the cold, mechanical pulse of industrial and aggrotech, the band continues to carve out a space that feels both familiar and forward-thinking.

Following a string of releases that have gradually pushed their sonic boundaries, this new track captures a sense of urgency—both musically and thematically. “I Need Out” channels frustration with the state of the modern world while transforming that tension into something powerful and energizing. It’s not just an escape anthem—it’s a statement of intent.

We caught up with the band to dive deeper into the creative process behind the single, their evolving sound, the story behind the artwork, and what lies ahead for Damned To Downfall.

1. What does the title “I Need Out” mean to you personally and as a band?

It means being sick of what our world is becoming and wanting to escape it, thus the title "I Need Out". As a band, it's another step in constantly evolving, this time with a slightly more modern sound.

2. Can you walk us through the writing and recording process for this single?

All our tracks start off in different ways, sometimes it's a riff, a bass line, or a drum beat, and this time it was the bass line and distorted kick that became the intro/verse that kicked it off, and then the pieces just fell into place with the chorus and interlude that takes the track in different directions. The recording process was pretty much the same as always, with me recording everything in my studio and then spending too much time on mixing and mastering.

3. How did you approach blending Industrial, Aggrotech, and extreme metal elements on this track?

After our "Slavery for You" EP in 2023, we decided to move more into the industrial side of things, starting with the "Last Man Falling" single in 2024, so this track basically continues that path while we try to evolve for every new release, bringing in new elements/sounds/arrangements, etc. That said, black/death metal is part of our DNA, so mixing that with industrial/aggrotech back and forth within the same track comes very natural to us, and I guess that combination is what defines this band's sound, wise.

4. Did anything different or experimental happen during the production of “I Need Out”?

Main thing this time was that for the past singles we re-used some core sounds like the main drumkit, ampsims, and some synth sounds, but this time we decided to start fresh with zero re-use, that were both creative and challenging.

5. What themes or emotions were you aiming to capture lyrically?

Most of our recent lyrics are centered around what this world is evolving into, and that goes for this track too, emotion wise we hope people feel energized and empowered rather than depressed.

6. Do you feel this track represents a new direction for Damned To Downfall? If so, how?

Not so much, at least if you consider our previous 2-3 singles, I see it more as a continuation of that path we took in 2024. But as we continue that path, we still try to evolve and try new things, which perhaps resulted in a slightly more modern sound this time.

7. How does “I Need Out” compare to your previous release, “Swallow Your Soul”?

In a way, "Swallow Your Soul was a bit of a step backwards into extreme metal territory in the sense that we raised the BPM's and brought in d-beats, crust punk riffs, and solos on that track, so I guess "I Need Out" is more similar to the "Nothing will save us" single before that.

8. Who or what inspired the sound and intensity behind this single?

Watching the news and social media is all you need for endless lyrics inspiration, sound-wise it comes from everything we listen to in all styles we combine, both old and newer stuff, in particular songs that are intense in one way or the other.

9. What’s the story or concept behind the artwork for “I Need Out”?

It was actually influenced by two albums that had an impact on us while growing up. First, the overall concept and layout were influenced by Napalm Death's From Enslavement to Obliteration album, with a man in the middle holding his fingers against his head in frustration at the misery surrounding him. The second one was The Exploited's Troops of Tomorrow, which had this painting including the band members, which was really cool. So the idea was to combine these into a more modern artwork that represents the track and lyrics, and I think it turned out quite cool.

10. How has the reaction been so far since the release on April 10?

It's just been out a week, so reactions are just coming in, but so far we have received very positive feedback except one keyboard warrior on a Facebook group who thought our reel with the chorus was the worst post of the day :-) So all in all very good, I would say, when you mix two genres which both have a fairly conservative audience, you will not be loved by everyone, and that's fine, we are not interested in replicating what has already been done since the 80/90's.

11. Do you see this single as part of a larger upcoming project or era for the band?

Possibly, either an EP with the recent tracks or an album with some additional tracks and possibly some remixes by other artists. We'll reach out to some labels and see if we can find a partner in this and take it from there.

12. What message do you hope listeners take away after hearing the track?

First and foremost, they enjoy the track but perhaps also reflect a bit about the message as described above.

13. Are there any artists or bands you’d love to collaborate with in the future?

Yes, Flymeon, who is more high-energy techno with some guitars, would be really cool. Youth Code would also be really interesting.

14. What’s next for Damned To Downfall in 2026? Any live shows or new releases in the works?

We are working on some new tracks, so probably another single in the second half of this year, possibly as part of an EP/LP. No live shows are currently planned, but we are again discussing bringing the Damned to the stages and what the setup would be, etc., so let's see what the future brings.

15. If you could sum up “I Need Out” in one sentence, what would it be?

An industrial metal / aggrotech assault on a world gone mad.

16. Is there anything else you’d like to share with your fans and our readers?
