Interviews: When Suddenly
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Punk Rock band When Suddenly from England. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it or did it just come out like that?
Everybody brought several band names, and we had a knockout tournament of them all, and When Suddenly won.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We love playing emo and punk rock music because it’s what we grew up on, we know other bands on the scene, and it helps us feel part of the community. We also love to feel like we don’t have to hold back any of our less positive thoughts and turn them into something to have fun with.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Zach and Joe are siblings and started their first band together at 13 years old, and haven’t stopped since. They've reached the point where they don't even need to speak to know what they're both thinking musically. Daniel met the band later through our manager, Jaye, and we all just immediately got each other.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
Joe: Modern Baseball
Zach: Knocked Loose
Daniel: Bowling For Soup
So quite an amalgamation of genres!
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
I think at its best, emo finds poetry in difficult places, and I find I end up taking inspiration from conversations I have with my friends. Being around 30, my peers are in places where they start to tally up what they have and haven't achieved, and I find there's something really interesting about the idea of wondering if you're past the point of starting things or reinventing yourself.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was at Rat & Pigeon, Manchester, in April, opening for our friends in Two Trains Left during their first UK tour. Kidpunk played after us, too. I really believe in 2-3 years we’ll look back at this lineup and think "can you believe these bands once played in an 80-cap venue?!". Hopefully, people will also say that about us!
7. Whom would you like to feature with?
We'd love to work with the bands that have inspired us - Tades and Chris from Hot Mulligan, Gabe and Esden from Saturdays At Your Place, and Allen from Arm’s Length. On a local level, we’d love to find a moment to collaborate with our friends in the scene, like Hospital Radio, Vienna, and Gambling With Dogs.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
For sure! I think the thing to remember is just getting up there in the first place is an amazing feat, and no one else could be playing your songs with your unique voice. Doing it over and over helps.
11. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
We did sign someone's shirt after a show once, and then their face dropped, and they immediately said: "Oh no, I can't wear this now, what have I done?!"
12. Something to add?
Thank you for reading! New music and new show announcements are incoming very soon, so keep an eye out.
