The backstory to the song is found in the gospel of Luke Chapter 9:60, in which Jesus asks a man to follow him. The man replies I will follow, but let me first go bury my Father. Jesus replies, "Follow me! and let the dead bury the dead.

Jesus was emphasizing the spiritual condition of humanity and juxtaposing it with the physical reality. In the same way that humans die and are dead physically, spiritually towards God, their condition is no different.

Jesus later proclaims that only He can resurrect the dead to eternal life. The track reflects on Christ's words that He is the only way to salvation, resurrection, and life everlasting.
