Interviews About Albums: Only Echoes - Born Adrift (2026)

In this new interview, we sat down with the American Instrumental Post-Metal band Only Echoes to ask questions about their album, "Born Adrift".

1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?

This is our second full-length album, and we are super excited to share it with everyone. This record has been in the works for over two years, and we are super proud of it. We hope that this is the record to put us on the map for American post-metal.

2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?

Born Adrift is the title of the album and of the first song. It's really about the idea of searching for meaning while floating in an endless ocean. The world is huge and meaningless, and that search is at the base of a lot of human struggle.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?

Our bass player, Ben, actually wrote almost all of this album. He wrote full demos of every song, and we learned to play every song almost exactly the way he wrote them, but we have been playing these songs live for over 2 years now so over time, some changes have been made. A few new parts and some changes to structures, but that's really it. They are definitely Ben's songs, but after playing and recording them with everyone doing their own part, it definitely would not have come out the same with any other group of people. It's still an Only Echoes record.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

I'd pick the second song of the album, Tempest. Tempest is the longest song at almost 9 minutes, and it's an absolutely massive song that covers so much ground. It has some of my favorite parts on the album and also has an insane guitar solo that I think really sets it apart. The second half of the song has a really cool buildup to a very climactic ending that feels like such a payoff.

5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD? If there is what it is?

The message is just not to give up. This album is not about success or failure in life; it's about the struggle, because the struggle is where all the real progress is made. This album can be heavy, soft, depressing, and ecstatic. Making albums that reflect real life is really important to us.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

We are an instrumental band, so lyrics just aren't the way we communicate emotion. But I think that all of these songs have a lot to say, and listening to them just once won't tell the whole story.

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

We would definitely like to thank the bands that have come before us, playing heavy instrumental metal. Pelican, Russian Circles, and If These Trees Could Talk are huge influences on us.
