Interviews About Albums: Post Pulse - Lupaus (2026)

In this new interview, we sat down with the Finnish Metal band Post-Pulse to ask questions about their album, "Lupaus".

1. What can you say about this new CD?

The album Lupaus is the culmination of 11 years of hard work by four musicians who genuinely care about satisfying their need to create art and about the people who experience that art. Each song on this release is special and contributes to the wider body of work to tell a comprehensive story. Lupaus is not a concept record like our debut album, Halls of the Damned, but it does carry an emotional theme that we feel resonates with the listener subconsciously.

Lupaus is special to us, as we’ve finally reached a point in our evolution where our sound is developed enough to be applied to musical ideas, and not just a byproduct of pedals and consistent use of our favorite mixing/mastering team.

All in all, Lupaus feels like we’re in the right place at the right time, and we hope those who listen to it feel the same way.

2. What is the meaning of the CD name?

“Lupaus” is Finnish for “The Promise.” The title track of the record is a deeply personal and touching story that encapsulates the emotional energy of Antti Karhu’s (our guitarist & songwriter) vision. While he never writes ‘literally’, he has an acute understanding of his feelings and how to adapt feelings to the music he creates. Lupaus carries a deeply personal feeling for Antti, and so it’s fitting that the lyrics remain in his native Finnish language.

We decided to make the song ‘Lupaus’ the title track of the album because of how much it means to each of us. Individually, we all have our own relationship with the song. As a group, we bring that emotional energy together to create something uniquely special, and it’s a feeling that resonates with everyone who listens.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD?

Musical composition, arranging, and most of the lyric writing come from our guitarist, Antti Karhu.

In the early days of the band, we operated as a democracy. With decent musicians, satisfying songs can be born in a democratic band. Over the years, however, we all realized that Antti is the one with a particular vision and skillset to not only write the core of our music, but to steer us conceptually.

Antti doesn’t write bass or drum parts for Post Pulse. He knows his bandmates exceptionally well. He knows what he can expect from us, and he knows how to communicate his vision in ways that each of us understands, internalizes, and converts into musical contributions he can work with to produce a meaningful final product.

Like all bands, we’re invested emotionally in the parts we write, the production, and the final result. Unlike most bands, we are happy to lean on such a creative and thoughtful visionary.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

This is a big question. What are we picking the song for? I can pick different songs from the Lupaus record to satisfy different needs and preferences, so it’s difficult to know without greater context.

If I had to pick just one song to share with someone who has never heard Post Pulse before, I would share The Hole. The song is an epic story with the emotional energy, musical prowess, and orchestration that encapsulate everything that is ‘Post Pulse’.

If someone doesn’t have 22 minutes to experience our monster hit, I might suggest the album’s namesake, Lupaus. Globally, most people won’t understand the Finnish lyrics. However, the distinct Post Pulse sound, songwriting, and genuine feeling portrayed by Lupaus is one that resonates beyond the literal words telling the story.

If you want to know what we stand for, give a listen to A Strategy of Peace. This ‘instrumental’ contains JFK’s famous speech, capturing a moment from the past that is, unfortunately, still relevant today. The political stance of Post Pulse in the Lupaus era is quite clearly stated and felt.

5. Is there a special message on this CD? If there is, what is it?

In a world riddled with conflict, growing loss of innocent life as a result of decisions made, and a majority of the populace seemingly apathetic to their increasingly violent surroundings, it only makes sense to discuss the most important topic on earth: peace.

So, Lupaus has a very special message: In a confusing world where the battles waged by armies demolish civility, and wars of the mind ravage our morality, isn’t it time that we look introspectively and decide where we stand? Isn’t it time to understand and do something about it?

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

As the bass player, my job is to shake the room and look pretty. That said, there is a part in the 22-minute monster track, The Hole, that stays with me every time I hear or play it.

“There’s no one inside your head.
There’s no one outside your head.
There’s nobody inside your head.
There’s nobody out there.”

The lyrics repeat in a carefully executed crescendo over several minutes, culminating in an explosive resolution that gives me chills every single time.

My take on this moment in the epic track is one of a mental breakdown. No, not a breakdown where one becomes psychotic and goes nuts… rather, a breakdown where an overwhelming depression is amplified by anxiety, and we get lost in a maze in the darkest part of our minds.

It’s horrific. It’s intense. And, it’s beautiful.

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album?

Perhaps many musicians will list out individuals who inspire them to play better, or family members who inspire them to work harder. I’ll answer this question the best way I can: We’re inspired by the world around us. The good and bad of it all is funneled into our creative process, churning, grinding, and molding the art that comes out the other end.

Like everyone around us, we see what’s happening in the world, and it impacts our psyche. We are touched, whether we want to be or not, by the events that shape our environment. There is nothing more real and honest than reality. And this reality… well, it’s strong enough a source of inspiration to write a thousand albums.

8. Something to add?

The world is a confusing place. It can be difficult to know right from wrong, good from bad, and real from fake. When everyone lies, where does the truth live?

Post Pulse is a bubble where, for a moment, I find refuge from the chaos of the world. From the outside, people may see a loud band from Helsinki. But, in our circle, there’s a feeling that everything is going to be alright… at least for a moment. Post Pulse allows me to breathe, and to remove the mask I wear for the rest of the world.

If you don’t have refuge for yourself, or if you need a safe place to breathe, perhaps Post Pulse can be that for you as well.

Think of us as family, and you’ll have the right perception of who and what we are.

Thank you for taking the time to read a few words. I hope you’ll take a moment to enjoy some of the Lupaus record, and message us on Instagram to let us know what you think. -Sam Roon, Bass
