Interviews About Albums: Among Legends - Lose My Grip (2026)

In this new interview, we sat down with the Canadian Melodic Punk/Punk Rock/Pop Punk band Among Legends to ask questions about their album, "Lose My Grip".

1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?

Sara: It's different from our last record in a way that we're really excited about. More songs pull from our punk rock influences, everything is a little rawer and more aggressive, but there are still moments that feel like natural continuations from the previous record. We've got some pretty diverse lyrical themes - there are songs touching on relationships and emotional instability, but we've also got lyrics about climate change and the scourge of condescending dudes in bands. I feel like we've really pushed our songwriting on this record, and have landed on a sound that feels true to the kind of music we like to listen to and want to make.

2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?

Mitchell: Lose My Grip is a line from the second-last song on the album, What's It Gonna Be. Although the song itself doesn't necessarily represent the ideas on the whole album, I think that lyric is a good summation of the themes present throughout the album. Stability has been a hard feeling to find in recent years, and the idea of "lose my grip" matches those different experiences that come with instability. It’s a lot of looking around and asking “how did we get here,” whether that’s about the state of our countries, our communities, our relationships, or ourselves - places where we once had a strong grip on stability, that maybe isn't so strong now.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?

Mitchell: On this record, Sara was the primary songwriter and lyricist for 5 songs, and I was the primary songwriter and lyricist for 7 songs. But once we introduce our song ideas to the rest of the band, things become very collaborative! We work on each other's lyrics, we discuss the different parts that everyone is thinking about playing, and we work on the structures together for songs that don't seem to be totally clicking. I love working with the band on our songs, and I really appreciate that no matter who has the original idea for a song, it always ends up feeling like we all did it together.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

Sara: It's a tough question, but I think if I had to only listen to one song from this record, it would be Go On. I love the way this song turned out, and I think it has so many of the qualities that we strive for when writing songs - it's fast, all of the parts complement each other really well, there are killer harmonies, and I think Mitchell did a great job with the lyrics. I like the fact that it doesn't overstay its welcome - the song is just over 90 seconds long, but it packs a punch and doesn't let up in intensity. Plus, the extra guitar part at the end adds a really cool layer that I think elevates the song and makes the ending really impactful. This song rips, I love it.

5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD? If there is what it is?

Mitchell: Lose My Grip is darker than our previous record, but there are still moments of hope throughout the songs. Sound The Alarm, Back Again, Floating Here For Years, Oversaturated, and The Last Time all include some element of hopefulness, even if they aren't all "happy" songs. I think there's something cool about that on this record - songs can be angry and hopeful, or melancholy and hopeful, or positive and hopeful. Not all the songs do this, but I really like that it does persist throughout the album.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

Sara: I'm really happy with the chorus lyrics for the song Back Again: "So bury me under distorted frequencies - set adrift on flailing limbs of people who I'll never meet. Feel at home among the nameless faces, as the ground it rumbles underneath our feet. Bury me - with the loose change and the empty cans, debris left in the aftermath. I'll ride this high into the work week - just counting down until I'm back again." This was written during COVID, when the idea of seeing music in a live setting felt like it might never happen again. I watched live-streamed performances, and we tried to do some band stuff remotely, but at the end of the day, I was still just sitting alone in my apartment, missing the communal experience of watching and playing live music. These lyrics speak to that time, and how a love for music can pull you through the monotony of routine and working life.

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

Sara: It's probably cliché to say, but I think a love of punk rock is the basis of our inspiration for this album. Without finding punk at a young age, experiencing the DIY ethos that permeates the scene first-hand, realizing that anybody can start a band and make things happen, we probably wouldn't be doing this now. Sonically, we're indebted to all of the awesome punk bands that we grew up listening to, but the notion that we could simply start writing songs, book some shows, and make an album really comes from watching the people and bands in our local scenes do it first, and taking inspiration from them.
