Interviews: Marylane

On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Rock band Marylane from Sweden. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it just come out like that?

It's almost a question we can ask ourselves. We actually had a variety of different ideas, but most turned out to be taken, which is a fact today for many new artists. The goal was to try to make the name look good on a logo, not be too complicated, and reflect the visual identity we wanted to build, which essentially takes place in an abandoned amusement park from a bygone era.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

A simple answer to that question is that we like it. We play what we feel like on the day (mood of the day), and in that way, it becomes at least authentic, if nothing else. We don't think too much about which genre we're placed in, but considering our references and musical background, it feels natural that we lean towards a rawer sound.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Jonas and Mary have known each other for a long time, but it was only in 2023 that it resulted in a music project. Magnus and Mary played together during high school, but when some of the band members sought other projects, it fell through. We felt it was time for a reunion in 2023 when we started with Marylane. 

4. Each band member's favourite band?

Jonas: Anything that is genuine and created by real people.

Mary: Good question, I would probably say Led Zeppelin or Type O Negative. 

Magnus: Yngwie Malmsteen, KISS, Symphony X, among others.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

As the head of one’s own creativity, it’s definitely the mood of the day that inspires the songwriting in the direction it takes. The best is if you can finish a song framework in one day, because next week it might be a different feeling that emerges, and then the result will be something else. Furthermore, it’s definitely also other musicians whose music, artistic expression, and abilities contribute to reflection and development, which in itself is inspiring for songwriting. It’s always wonderful to start with a blank slate, find a sound you like, and begin experimenting with rhythm and tempo. The feeling of “this could be something” is enough to find inspiration for a whole song. Since we don’t overthink our songs, most of it comes naturally.

6. Where was your last gig?

Marylane hasn't played any live shows yet. But we hope to get out there eventually when everything is in place, and we have material for it. Currently, we’re missing a couple of live musicians who want to play with us. Let's hope that the universe has a great plan for us…

7. Where would you like to act?

For the atmosphere, it would be fantastic to play a large summer festival, preferably around 8 PM when people have just settled into the right mood after food and rest, charged for the later main acts of the evening.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

A band that likes our music and our artistic expression, and that doesn’t take everything too seriously.

9. Whom not?

A band that thinks more about the party than the performance

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Of course, we have, and it’s perfectly normal. The first step is to let courage convince fear that it is doable. That is, to be brave enough to dare to go on stage and deliver, even if you know there’s a potential risk of stage fright. Most of the time, it’s usually temporary. The best advice we can give is to be so secure in what you are going to deliver that you can think of other things without losing your thread, even if stress arises.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Definitely bands you grew up with. And since we are all 80s kids, it feels natural that we have been inspired a lot by the music created around that time. Mary thinks it’s common to have your biggest musical experiences during your youth and when transitioning from youth to adulthood, and that it then stays with you as a reference frame for everything new that you listen to.

It’s amazing that they are choosing to listen to us when the competition is as tough as it is today.

Our album ”Seventh Sense” is coming out on July 17, and in conjunction with that, we will also release an official music video for the album's greatest track, according to us, called “SEVEN”, on our official YouTube channel. The video is definitely worth watching as it is recorded in a completely magical and surrealistic environment connected to Patric Ullaeus from rEvolver film company, who also produced the film along with assistant Pamela.
